So long waited and then ...

17.03.2016
After I already had a VOX AD 15 VT and a VT 30 and so had a lot of fun, I thought I would get me the latest representative of the Valvetronix series with 40 watts. While the VOX VT20X was already available since December 2015, the VT40X is only available (beginning of March 2016).

There is almost nothing to complain about. Negatively noticeable to me is that the amp at the lift up on the handle goes into the oblique position, since the handle was not placed optimally. Why I use black buttons on black background, I can not understand. The predecessors were cream-colored buttons, which were better off the dark background. But after all, it is chicken-potis that let the regulator feel.

The external power supply does not bother me, if the amp has thereby less Nebengeräusche. Compared to the VT 30 with an internal power supply, the auxiliary noises have not disappeared, but also not so loud that they would disturb me.

The nice black dress of the combos and the seductively pretty covering of the loudspeaker opening would be worth mentioning. Why closing a relatively large part of the front with a board is probably the result of higher physical knowledge. In my opinion, the loudspeaker is thereby narrowed in its sound development.

Now to the sound:
The clean amp models sound quite dynamic (especially with higher Gaine settings). In the mid- and high-gain amp models I would have hardly recognized a model if I had not read the label before. If you listen to these amp models via the headphones (the ClassA / ClassA-B circuit is deactivated), they all sound quite similar from the distortion structure. Only the gain range and the sound control are modeled on the models. In my opinion the real basic character of the modulated amplifier does not come over (eg in contrast to the POD HD). Thus, the rectifier sound with middle gain and chord play is quite squashed and little transparent, so completely different from the original. The Brit-800 sound also lacks the typical Marshall bite. In a product video on the VOX side, it was said that the amps are analogous modulated. Maybe that's the reason. To install a separate analog circuit for each amp model would be a huge effort and would lead to a much higher price.

Most work? Amplifier models with the ClassA / B circuit. This circuit makes the VT40X very small and mid-resonant, as if you suddenly reduce the speaker significantly. If you switch to ClassA, you have to turn the bass back and lift the treble high. For this I have to say that I have only tested this at room volume.
The setting of the bias with Normal / Cold / Hot works well and you really feel a difference when playing.

A further disadvantage is that the noise gate can not be completely deactivated. For example, after each turn of the Preset knob, the effect button must be pressed, then the Value knob turned to the left. Although you can preset three different levels, even the lowest level reaches my opinion too fast in the sound.

To the effects:
It is incomprehensible to me why the chorus was arranged in the first effect group. The Compressor-Chorus-Hall combination is no longer possible. Delay is also in my opinion in the second effect group also deplatziert. Particularly disturbing is that when trying to edit an effect, the adjusted parameters are set to a different value when the effect is selected. Several good effects of the VT 30 were completely canceled (eg Auto-Wah, Octave and Rotary).

The App? Tone Room? I installed on the iPad. This allows you to make additional settings that are not found on the panel of the amp. Unfortunately, the app for me is not usable since almost everything was pressed on a screen (no scroll function) and thus the controllers are extremely small. The app does not work with VoiceOver and Magnification. But I can imagine that even good-looking people have problems with the operation of the app, since the buttons on the screen are too small. The editor for the PC is supposedly not compatible with Windows XP.

My conclusion:
Anyone looking for authentic sounding mid- or high-gain amp models is wrong here. The clean to tweaked sounds are quite good, especially if you refined them with the good sounding effects. The one or other distorted Amp model is not bad, but for my taste is not too dynamic. For this, I also have to say that my ears are very spoiled (Blackstar HT1R solid-state over HarleyBenton 12? -Vintage30-Box, Line6 POD HD bean over headphones). For the comparatively low price one may not expect more. As far as I can remember, however, the VTs' zeros sounds were closer to the sound of a full tube amplifier. When buying, I had assumed that the latest model is a further development of the two previous models. Apparently, however, a new approach has been taken here with analog amp modeling. So it means for me, maybe wait a generation again.

Amplifier VOX VT40X

09.04.2016
Satisfied overall BUT:

* There is a storage space for the power supply and a jack
* The power supply makes a little cheap (duration in the time of the connector 19 volts ...)
* The power supply should have been integrated into the amplifier
* The carrying handle is not centered (balancing)
* A tempo of passing from one model of amp to another would be judicious because if one does not mistrust there is a very big difference of volume between certain models; So lower the volume necessarily before a change of amp.
* A tutorial from the manufacturer or from THOMANN would be welcome for the memories and reminders of programming.

TO SUM UP :
A good amp on the whole; Powerful enough with very good mixing effects on the amp itself and with the TONE ROOM software of VOX. Ideal to repeat daily or in a group or small concert in bar with some MINOR defects of previously mentioned youths.
* * * Value for money * * *
