Tascam Model 16

There are many uses for this hybrid product. It fitted very well and became my central unit in my home studio.
1.- Use as a mixer for performing:
The analogue part of Model16 is very intuitive to use and the sound quality is more than descent for my needs. The mixer has everything a classic user has been used to: 2 aux and a separate fx bus, several output buses, a subgroup, pfls/afls, etc. More contemporary features like a compressor per channel are very welcome. Do not be too aggressive with the compressor though as above 5 it alters the sound rather radically. The tone controls are descent and very usable for performing mixes. I only use two of the reverbs from the build-in FX, I don't have any use for the otherwise average FXs.
2.-Multitrack recorder:
This part is 100% digital and luckily it does not record any of the tone/FX settings. I love this feature. It allowed me to be 100% computer free during composing/arranging. For a quick demo it records also the final mixdown, with tone/FX included, but I have used this only for previews. Instead I import the recorded channels into Ableton and do levels, pan, EQ, compression, delay, reverb inside the DAW. That's how I realize my LoFi productions at the moment.
I have used a MIDI tape sync unit to record a MIDI sync channel for some productions, making it master MIDI sync during recording. This makes overdubbing easier. As I hardly do any overdubbing, it did not worth the trouble.
3.-Computer audio interface. For regular playback it sounds good. However for heavy Ableton projects it is not working well on my computers. I use another audio interface for playback. I did tested it as a multi track recording interface and it worked very well. However, I love my DAW-less rig and skip this use.
4.-Missing features:
I would appreciate a MIDI in connector and the possibility of a sync track with its own independent tempo track.
I would appreciate more control over de compressors.
I would love the possibility to chose whether I record the tone/compressor or not, as well as two extra internal channels for the FX bus.
5.-What about the Model12?
For a long time I have been considering the Model12 as it has more advanced MIDI features. But it is 100% digital, misses the extra busses for aux fx and monitoring and has too few inputs for me.

I think the Tascam Model16 is a brilliant product, combining old classic standards with new innovations in an inspiring way. It will never stand in the way but will always been able to support your workflow. The price is also very nice for all these features. On the other hand I would prefer to pay a few more bucks for a more sturdy build for on the road. It is great as studio equipment for small home studios and DIY producers.

Le workflow est étrange, surtout avec Logic Pro. Il faut passer son temps à rerouter toute l’installation entre enregistrements et mixages.

Au delà des soucis pratiques, l’unité est arrivée avec un soucis gênant : les compresseurs de pistes fonctionnaient à l’envers. A savoir, allumés en position off et éteints à fond. Ce, sur 4 tranches.

De fait, unité renvoyée.
Dommage, c’était prometteur.

Für die Kombination von Proberaum und Kleinstudio habe ich noch nach einem "universellen Specificum" gesucht, bei dem das Wesentliche immer angeschlossen und auch gleich Recording-bereit ist und das bei guter Soundqualität.
Ich habe mich nach viel Recherche schließlich auf das Tascam Model 16 fixiert - und um es gleich zu sagen: Ich habe es keine Sekunde bereut!
Alles angeschlossen und los geht's... gleich vielkanalig auf SD-Karte mitschneiden? - Klar und klingt bei 48khz/24 Bit auch wie vorher eingespielt und dabei über die zahlreichen Ausgänge mitgehört - Super!
Mal eben was vom Handy zum mitspielen über Bluetooth oder sonstige Aux-Signalen über den Stereokanal 13/14 abspielen (oder auch gleich mit aufnehmen - Super!) macht auch voll Spass, weil es so einfach geht.
Anschlüsse (10 Micros oder stattdessen 12 Mono-Instrumente oder 8 Mono-und 2 Stereo Instrumente + Bluetooth/Aux).
Als Setup z.B. Guitar/Bass/2xVocals/eDrums Stereo/Keyboard Stereo/Guitar Stereo und noch Platz für mehr sowie eine Reihe recht guter Effekte reicht in der Regel für eine kleine Band schon aus.
Bei meistens 4 Equalizer Poties + Compressor pro Kanal lässt sich am Sound auch noch gut feilen und aufgenommene Spuren lassen sich auch wieder einzeln nochmal neu einspielen ohne dass andere Spuren beeinträchtigt werden.
Neben den Master, Submix und Control-Room-Ausgängen gibt auch noch zwei Monitor-Ausgänge, die leider nur in Mono ausgelegt sind, was eigentlich normal ist, aber Stereo wäre trotzdem schöner für mein Umfeld... .
Das wäre aber eigentlich auch das Einzige (...und vielleicht noch ne Fernbedienung für die Aufnahmefunktionen), was ich als Sahnehäubchen noch gerne oben drauf gehabt hätte.

Die Bedienungsanleitung ist ausreichend, verständlich und hilfreich.
Ich persönlich habe nach Vorab-Durchlesen des Manuals Online während der Wartezeit auf das Gerät recht intuitiv einen schnellen Einstieg in die vielen tollen Features erfahren.

In der DAW (hier Cubase 8.5):
Es lassen sich hier über den Model 16 Asiotreiber 14 Kanale + 1 Stereo Masterkanal (15/16) konfigurieren und einzeln bearbeiten, die dann die die Spuren des Model 16 wiederspiegeln können.
Auf dem Gerät aufgenommene Spuren lassen sich 1:1 z.B. nach Cubase importieren.
Super!

Das war ein Schritt in die richtige Richtung. Nach kurzer Einarbeitung kann man sich primär dem Eigentlichen - nämlich der Musik - widmen und ich kann diesen Mixer mit voller Überzeugung in diesem Preissegment empfehlen.
...und irgendwie hübsch ist das Teil auch noch ;-)
