Classical Flatwounds
Steve550 31.08.2014
I play a variety of instruments but mainly brass and guitar. The styles are jazz or close to jazz, including flamenco guitar. Because I wanted a nylon string guitar I could play in an amplified setting, I bought an Ibanez EWN30SYE-NT which (when properly set up) is excellent amplified and not too prone to feedback.

Because I use flatwounds on my archtop guitar and fretless bass, I decided to try flatwound classical nylon strings.

I was VERY HAPPY with the result. They are described on the Thomastik website as a "student or practice string": I would consider them of professional standard in non-classical fields. For jazz guitarists using nylon string guitars they are excellent. They produce a nice variety of tones without adjusting the guitar's EQ.

Needless to say, the string noise when moving around the neck is much reduced (not eliminated). They are much more comfortable under the pads of the fretting fingers and less abrasive to fingernails.

Because this set has a this, wound G string, rather than unwound nylon, it may allow steel string players venturing into nylon to feel more comfortable. I would even recommend classical guitarists to try them: you may be surprised...

Perfect!

This set fits perfectly with my fretless classical guitar. Wound G string provides a balance for playability. It sounds pretty good as well. I like it and probably keep them for my fretless classical guitar.

Stunning

If you're used to classical strings, these are a little different.
There's a decrease in volume, but a significant increase in clarity & separation.
The feel is still nylon but with a definite move towards a steel string feel, the strings are where you left them & they're less likely to move from under your fingers.
If you're into folk & nylon, these could be the only strings you'll ever need.
They'll definitely change the sound of your classical guitar & you may like that (or not)
I really enjoyed these strings ?

100% suits my purpose
Shahab Tolouie 15.02.2015
I play a custom built triple-neck guitar which one of the necks is a fretless and I was looking for an untraditional sound for it for quite a while. I needed the sound to be a bit closer to that of lute or even an Oud and these strings fulfil the purpose, though they could be more resonant or louder which to my ear is the only downside of it. other reason they don't produce a traditional classical/flamenco sound (and they're not meant to be) is that since they're flat-wound, they don't make that typical scratch noise while you slide your finger over the string. if you're looking for an untraditional/atypical sound to add to you acoustic guitar, this is the way to go. they 100% suit my purpose
