MOTU 24 AI

I needed even more inputs for my home studio. I previously bought a Motu 16A but i needed more ports. So With 16A, 24Ai, Ultralite AVB and the AVB Switch I have plenty.

While it takes some time to get around the connection matrix. It's a great interface.

Pros
- Built like a tank
- Lots of ports in a small form factor
- Easy to adapt to your current system (can be used stand alone as well)

Cons:
- Could have at least two main out
- The display feels dated. I wish it had color display as the new M2 and M4

well this is my second AVB unit. I bought an Ultralite AVB a few months back for live recording but needed more mic channels so got the 24AI. Sonically the 24ai is incredible. Far Far better than the RME FF802 for sonics. The drivers on the Motu are rock solid too. I've recorded 6 gigs to 18ch 24/96 onto a Pyramix 9 DAW and nothing but a joy. I use the Ultralite for monitoring when running the 24ai.

So now to the bad points. The build and finish is poor. I would have expected a much higher standard of finish but this thing looked liked it was hand sanded in someones garage. I contacted Motu sales USA and they told me to contact the European distributor - not good service.

I would still recommend it on sound quality alone. 24 pristine line ins at 24/192... come on.

Ich habe eine untypische Anwendung, trotzdem könnte meine Beurteilung für alle hilfreich sein.

Ich suchte nach einem Analoginterface für messtechnische Zwecke, das ich mit PC verwenden kann. Die Anwendung verlangt >24, ideal bis zu 64 Kanäle, die synchron einzulesen sind (dazu werde ich bald auf 48 Kanäle (2x 24Ai) aufrüsten). Die Vorverstärker dazu sind Eigenbau, Auswertung erfolgt in meiner eigenen Software die auf ASIO zugreift. Die ersten Versuche erfolgten mit 1x 24Ai.

+ Einige Fragen zum Interface bzw. Handbuch konnten vorab mit dem Support von MOTU geklärt werden, der prompt geantwortet hat.
+ Inbetriebnahme und Bedienung generell sehr einfach.
+ Firmwareupdate mit einem Klick erledigt, wenn man das Interface an Ethernet angeschlossen hat.
+ CPU-Last auf meinem Notebook mit i7-3667U (fast 5 Jahre alt) bei 24 Kanälen / 48 kHz immer unter 10 Prozent.
+ Einfacher Anschluss / Verkabeltung vieler Kanäle über die D-Sub Buchsen.
+ Signalqualität der Eingangsverstärker sehr gut. Hält offensichtlich, was MOTU hier verspricht. Genaue Messwerte muss ich erst aufnehmen.
o Etwas mehr Verstärkung an den Eingängen wäre hilfreich. Dann könnte man auch Mikrofone die keine Phantomspeisung benötigen problemlos direkt anschließen.
o Einfache Einstellung aller Eingangsverstärkungen (alle gemeinsam) wäre für meine Anwendung praktisch.
- Schade, dass USB 3 noch nicht unterstützt wird. Da könnte man auch auf PC (Notebook!) problemlos mehr als 2 Interfaces (über AVB untereinander verbunden) anschließen. Momentan ist man mit USB 2 bei 48 kHz auf maximal 64 Kanäle eingeschränkt, bei 96 kHz auf 32 Kanäle.

AVB-taugliche Netzwerkkarten und Treiber sind nach meinem Wissensstand am PC noch sehr wenige verfügbar - in Windows Notebooks praktisch gar nicht.

Den Sound kann ich nicht beurteilen.
