Evh 5150 III 15W LBX-S Top

I must admit that I have only played my old Marshall before (apart from trying other peoples amps) and that is way too loud to use at home.
After a lot of test-reading, and youtube-review-watching and just plain thomann-guide-reading I bought this and a Harley Benton G212 Vintage Vertical to use at home, to practice, to play, to mess around and have fun with.
This amp is just amazing. I can have a full-on over-saturated heavy-metal gain-sound without drowning out the accoustic sound of my pick hitting the strings!
Sure, the feeling of the sound pushing a wall of air towards you isnt found on that volume, but that is to be expected.
When not trying to be quiet it pushes the celestion speakers in a most satisfying way. :)

Le son est exceptionnel.
C'est vraiment ce que je cherchais.
Un gain monstrueux à faible volume grâce au switch permettant de jouer sur seulement 1/4 de la puissance.
En plus, le rétroéclairage par LED est vraiment très esthétique et met en valeur l'engin.
Le son clair est aussi au rendez-vous.
Ce qui fait défaut c'est la saturation intermédiaire (type AC/DC). Ici, soit c'est du clair, soit du très saturé. Mais c'est prévu comme ça. Pour un gain moyen, il y a d'autres modèles.
Par contre, je n'ai pas eu de chance car dans le transport, le colis a été un peu endommagé et l'ampli est arrivé avec un bouton de volume cassé en deux.
Par ailleurs, un défaut électrique était présent dès le départ : un "pop" assez bruyant au changement de canal que ce soit au bouton ou avec la pédale.
C'est l'occasion de tester le SAV THOMANN qui a été très réactif.
Après échange standard, le nouvel ampli fait aussi le "pop"' au changement de canal.
J'ai fini par contacter le service consommateurs EVH qui m'a expliqué que ce "pop" était normal. Dont acte.
"Those amps do have a noticeable pop to the channel switching, it is especially noticeable when switching from higher gain channel to lower gain channel. It is normal, and likely not defective in any way. You shouldn't notice it when you're standing away and playing with a band, but it will be obvious if you're playing in a room at your house. "

Habe den Evh 5150 III zusammen mit dem PRS MT15 getestet jeweils an einer 1x12 er Palmer-Box mit Celestion V30 und Celestion G12 H jeweils in 16 Ohm Ausführung. Der Sound im Clean-Kanal ist absolut erstaunlich für einen Amp, den man eher im High-Gain-Bereich verortet. Mit großer Kraft und Klarheit gehts hier zur Sache ohne dabei unangenehm schrill zu sein. Durch getrennt regelbares Volume und Gain lässt sich hervorragend in den Crunch-Bereich reinregeln, ganz nach Gusto. Der reine Clean-Ton findet lautstärkemäßig dann bald seine Grenzen und man muss Gain dazuregeln. Dann aber geht's lautstärkemäßig nach oben bis einem die Ohren davon fliegen. Der Sound wird sagenhaft crunchig. Das lässt sich dann wunderbar mit dem Volumenregler in der Lautstärke herunterpegeln ohne seinen satten Sound einzubüßen. Wunderbar, so muss es sein.
Der Lead-Kanal ist dann eine ähnlich Offenbarung wie beim PRS. Ich habe schon viele Verstärker für den Normalgebrauch gehört und auch getestet, aber bei diesen beiden gibt es nur ein Wort dafür: H A M M E R ! Der EVH lässt sich - im Gegensatz zum PRS - dabei hervorragend in der Lautstärke regeln, weitgehend ohne dass die Magie dieses fantastischen Sounds dahinschwindet.
Die Bedienbarkeit ist etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig, denn Schalter und auch Regler befinden sich an der Gehäuserückseite. Das ist nach kurzer Eingewöhnung allerdings kein weiteres Problem, in meinen Augen aber unnötig (hätte man sicher auch konventionell lösen können). Für mich war nach langem "Kopf-an-Kopf-Rennen" klar: der PRS muss gehen, der EVH bleibt, weil er sich im heimischen Kellerraum einfach als gebrauchsfähiger und verträglicher in Punkto Lautstärke erwiesen hat.

All in all, i would not hesitate to say that this is a very nice amplifier in many regards. The feature set is up to what i'd expect for the price but it falls short in a couple of different ways - to the point where i ended up returning mine and looking elsewhere.

The clean channel on this amp sounds alright, nothing special to say really but a pretty decent pedal platform for basic clean stuff. Headroom on the 1/4 power mode was decent enough, though i can't say i'd trust it to sound the same when playing at a gigging volume.

Now, the gain channel on this amp. I expected the EVH sound that i had heard many times through demos on older revisions of the lunchbox EVH heads and the bigger ones, but this one just didn't sound like i wanted it to.
It sounded dark and loose and unfortunately the EQ could not really alleviate those issues without making the sound very fizzy and tinny.
I played this amp through a Celestion V30 loaded 1x12 cab which might have contributed to the darker sound, though my Marshall 2525h sounds way clearer and defined through the exact same cab so it's hard to say.

The actual physical amp is fine. Nothing to really point out as glaringly bad or good.

Summarizing just quickly, in my opinion this is not the EVH sound i expected from the amp. Whether that is a good thing or a bad thing depends entirely on the use case and individual preference, but this ended up sounding very tame, even just comparing it to something like a Marshall amp with TS in the front.

If you want to try this amp, i suggest you take full advantage of Thomann's return policy as this seems like a pretty polarizing sound signature, one that some will love and some will hate.
