"Standard de luxe" for nickel strings
Background: I have played bass since 1996, I have good instruments and amplification. My current band plays modern blues/rock and these strings are usen on a 1982 Squier JV Precision, MIJ.
This is a great string for a traditional (not old school!) Precision sound. (And I have tried many string types!)
Tension and stiffness is slightly about average, and you can play for long sets without getting sore fingers. If you dig in a bit harder, you will get that great, growly tone that sits so nice in the mix.
The sound is very good: big, fat lows with good sustain. Rich mids that fill out the mix and still can cut if you want, Top end is balanced and smooth. Not much finger noise. If you want super clean, glassy top end, this might be the wrong string.
Life time seems unsure, though. I have had average life time with some other D'addario strings before. Then it was the E string that died first, but these ones seem to last longer. The tone is still great, and it wants you to play more.
Highly recommended!

Reliable, long life workhorse
This string type has worked well for me through the years, on all passive basses I have used it on. (For my only active bass, I have preferred SS rounds.)
Every set so far has been great out of the package, no defective strings. They have a pleasant and balanced tone, and a long life, much better than many other brands. As they age, they still offer a tone that works well with the band, and I have never had a string "die" on me either. They just get duller.
For me, they are also a good compromise between smoothness and not being too rubbery. Tension and balance feels right.

Great, considering the price
The sound is crisp and clear on my Fender Jazz, but perhaps not as "smooth" as other strings. Great clarity and attack. I believe a week or two of playing might reduce the string/fret/finger sounds a bit and even out the overall sound.
