The gong only works for me when I use the smaller, harder cloth mallets with rubber core that came with other gongs. The gong works best on certain areas that have different pitches. The bigger softer mallets tend to lose the pitch/tone/high frequencies. With the perfect mallet, you can play a melody around the different hot spots, that's the best part, hence I give high score for sound (because of the melody).
