Everything in its right phase

The Behringer Sonic Ultramizer SU9920 is a psychoacoustic processor designed to enhance the perceived sound quality of a signal by compensating for the phase and amplitude differences that occur between frequencies during amplification. Unlike exciters or equalisers, the SU9920 does not affect specific frequency bands of audio signals. By optimising the phase alignment between the fundamental tone and the harmonics, the SU9920 improves loudness, clarity, presence, and speech intelligibility. Unlike other similar devices, the SU9920 is dedicated solely to phase correction, without adding harmonic enhancement or compression. This streamlined approach makes it incredibly easy to use, and as expected from Behringer, it comes at a highly competitive price.

Minimal effort, maximum impact

In an ideal world, unwanted sound alterations caused by phase shifts should not occur at all. When using high-end equipment, particularly premium EQs and speakers, these shifts typically remain imperceptible. However, in practical settings, particularly in live sound environments, extensive equalisation adjustments are often necessary, which can lead to phase-related artefacts. In such situations, the Behringer Sonic Ultramizer SU9920 provides an efficient solution for enhancing audio clarity and presence. Designed with versatility in mind, the SU9920 can be integrated into an audio system via the master or bus output of a live mixer or positioned between an instrument and a mixer/preamp. Dedicated Low contour and Process controls for each channel allow for precise tonal adjustments, yielding noticeable improvements in audio quality. As a two-channel processor, it is capable of handling stereo signals or processing two independent mono sources, making it a practical tool for both studio and live sound reinforcement applications.

Affordable audio enhancer

As previously noted, suboptimal audio equipment can introduce phase-related sound degradation. The Behringer Sonic Ultramizer SU9920 effectively addresses such issues by applying precise phase correction techniques. In setups that rely exclusively on high-end gear, a device like the SU9920 may not be essential. However, in situations where compromises in equipment quality are unavoidable, the SU9920 provides a simple yet effective solution for improving audio clarity. Its user-friendly design makes it particularly helpful for live performances, studio applications, and home setups where budget or technical constraints exist. With its intuitive controls, the SU9920 allows for quick and noticeable enhancements, making it a practical choice for both professionals and less experienced users.

About Behringer

The company, which was founded in Germany by Uli Behringer and now manufactures its products in China, has been known for affordable and great-value equipment since its very first product, the Studio Exciter F. An array of mixing consoles (such as the Eurodesk MX8000), signal processors, and later sound amplification and monitoring equipment, has made it possible for countless musicians to fit out their home studios, practice rooms, and mobile PAs within budget limits that were previously unthinkable. The acquisition of other companies, including Midas, Klark Teknik, and TC Electronic, meant that new product groups were added - and also resulted in the technical expertise of these companies being incorporated into product development.

For music and speech

Many professional engineers would likely steer clear of a phase correction tool like the Behringer Sonic Ultramizer SU9920, relying instead on their high-end, time-aligned EQs and speakers to maintain phase integrity and prevent audible issues. However, in settings such as project studios, budget-conscious venues, or home audio setups, the SU9920 can be a practical and affordable way to improve sound quality with minimal effort. Its impact is particularly noticeable in speech reproduction, where overall fidelity may be less critical, but clarity and intelligibility can be significantly enhanced.

I use my Alesis DM10 MKII Pro kit through this and after adjusting the bass and treble a few times, I got an incredible sound from this item.
The Alesis DM10 MKII Pro can sound somewhat dull and flat by itself (I was actually about to return this kit at the time), but when I played it through the SONIC ULTRAMIZER it took on a whole new life of it's own.
Brilliant sound enhancer, great for putting life into an instrument

Nice box to add a bit of power to a signal

Still getting used to having this in my chain, but works very nicely with bass synths to colour the low end a bit.

The 1U panel is clean and nicely spaced out with bright LEDs. The knobs feel a little cheap due to their plastic makeup, but they are notched which is nice if using it in stereo mode.

The In/Out switch easily allows you to bypass the unit and monitor what changes the SU9920 is actually making.

As often with Behringer, good products...........for the price.

Gives more definition to instruments and to your final mix....its more fresh sounding instead of mud
But....there is a lack of depth working like at a BBE, a BBE placed every instrument apart so you can go around that instrument. The Behringer is more flat.
