An excellent guitar to practice in sllencio
Javier Guitarrista, 16.12.2018
This version is the most similar to a classical guitar among Yamaha's "silent" guitar models. The mast has the same width and the rest of the measurements are similar.

The sensation when picking it up is the same as that given by a standard guitar or maybe a box electroacoustic with a little background. The way to support the right arm or put on the ropes with the right hand is very intuitive. With the left hand, by the way the guitar is made, the experience is the same as with a standard classical guitar. Also the lower support is comfortable. It does not give the feeling of being a guitar with many empty spaces.

Although for me the important thing is the sound of the instrument and its touch when playing, it must be said that aesthetically the guitar is beautiful. The materials are of first quality and their touch is excellent. So are the adjustments. You can start playing as it comes out of its case.

Bring everything you need to start immediately including a compact and well padded case and even a few helmets.

The sound both with headphones and plugged into an amplifier is very good. In my case I notice a bit of noise when using it with an amplifier, but it is not excessive and it surely comes from the environment in which I play. With helmets it has no appreciable noise.

The possibilities of regulation and equalization are excellent. You have control of highs and lows that gives a lot of play. The "emulation" of sound captured with a microphone is exceptional and by allowing the direct sound to be mixed with the emulation, I do not think there is anyone who does not find a suitable intermediate point to their preferences.

The tuner is chromatic and works well. It is precise and intuitive. Silence the guitar whether you are taking out the sound through headphones or using an amplifier, which I think is appropriate.

The auxiliary entrance also gives a lot of play; You can connect a phone or similar as a player and play along with any subject. You can also find a metronome or percussion app and play with it. By having your own volume control, you have full control on the guitar.

Finally, it incorporates three effects that sound very good. Two reverb, one more small room and another more church, which can be regulated. Finally a chorus that also gives a lot of play. In short, three options for coloring a good sound that can be used without the need for an external amplifier.

Its advantage is perhaps also its small drawback. It is a silent guitar and if you want to listen to it you will have to use a helmet or an amplifier. In this second case, for small sites I use it with the Yamaha THR5A. Some of its possibilities overlap with those offered by the guitar, but provides many more options to play with the sound at a weight of two kilos and with the possibility of using batteries or rechargeable batteries (8 AA). Linked to an Android application that can be found on Google Play, it allows you to manage the amplifier very well even without using a PC / Mac. If you are going to use it with this amplifier, try not to use any effect of the guitar. It is easier to manage them from the amplifier and it sounds better not to overlap effects in both.

Altogether it is an excellent guitar and that gives a lot of game to play with helmets or to play amplified. Although it is difficult that you do not like it for everything good, it does have some things that could be improved. If you are going to touch standing, you have how to fix a standard bandolier and it is well secured, although the anchor next to the mast makes it tend to fall off the side of the mast. It is not too uncomfortable, but it does not balance if you release your left hand.

As I mentioned, it may not be well shielded inside and in my case it takes a bit of background noise when plugged into an amplifier. It is not excessive, but it is more appreciable than in other electroacoustics that I have in similar conditions.

Finally, the striker who carries under the strings has in my opinion a rather unpleasant touch. When you rub it with your nails it does not give a good feeling and being rough makes some noise. It is not something that reaches the cases or the amplifier, but the touch could be better and those who are close if you wear helmets will hear it. I suppose it can be solved by cutting and pasting a sticker-type puncher. I do not notice it when I play with a pick, but it shows when I touch it with my hand.

Another good detail is that the electronics uses two AA batteries, which for my taste is a better option than a 9V battery. It also allows you to use rechargeable batteries, which is what I do.

Turning on and off the electronics is simple and has the good point of turning on when you connect a jack to the amplifier output and turn off when you turn it off. A period of inactivity is also turned off so as not to waste batteries due to carelessness.

I am very happy with this guitar. Now that I have it I play much more than before and with helmets is like playing with the instrument that really sounds, but without disturbing. The possibilities of playing with sound are more than enough to practice and the auxiliary input allows you to play with a player or a metronome. The size and weight in its case are very contained. I think you can not ask for much more to practice and take it from here to there. As a guitar to play amplified, I think it also measures up. I have to see if noise is a problem, although I think it will not be. Highly recommended if you can afford what it costs. It is not an initiation guitar; rather for someone who already has a tour. You will have a good instrument extraordinarily versatile for many years.

If you are not looking for a traditional classic, Yamaha has other models with nylon or steel strings as well.
