The small bass with the big sound

Warwick RockBass Corvette Basic Black Short Scale, electric bass guitar

Warwick’s been one of the top names in all things bass for decades – and that know-how really shines through in the Warwick RockBass Corvette Basic 4 Black Left-Handed Short Scale. This four-string bass with a shorter 762mm (30") scale length is part of the RockBass series, where Warwick packs its signature quality into instruments that won't break the bank. Short scale basses are known for their tighter fret spacing and, more importantly, lower string tension, which makes them incredibly easy to play and also gives them a warm, rounded sound. The Corvette line stands out thanks to its distinctive body shape: The long upper horn keeps the bass nicely balanced on its strap, while the shorter lower horn keeps the the higher frets accessible – there are 24 of them, after all. Topping it all off is a sleek, high-gloss black finish that gives this left-handed Short Scale a real stage-ready look.

Get shorty

The Warwick Corvette Short Scale's body is made from two pieces of alder, while the multi-piece neck combines maple with ekanga stringers. The fingerboard's crafted from wenge, giving it a smooth, natural feel. For that classic JB-style sound, it boasts a pair of active MEC single-coil pickups. The balance control lets bassists dial in the mix between the two pickups single-handedly (or indeed left-handedly), with the active 2-band EQ managing the bass and treble – perfect for shaping the Short Scale's tone on the fly. There's also a master volume dial; the controls are deliberately kept simple. Both the pickups and the electronics are active, powered by a 9V battery tucked away in the copper-shielded electronics compartment. Familiar Warwick features like security lock strap pins and snap-on covers for the truss rod and electronics cavity make life easier. The bass comes in a gigbag, complete with a truss rod key – this Corvette is ready to hit the road.

Full sound, warm low end

The Warwick RockBass Corvette Basic 4 Black Short Scale has a scale length about ten centimetres shorter than a standard long scale bass. That makes it incredibly comfortable to hold and play – perfect for kids, teens, or indeed anyone who finds full-size basses a bit of a stretch. And guitarists who occasionally fill in on a four-string will appreciate the shorter neck, since the string length will feel more familiar – closer to a guitar's. Even the extremely flat fingerboard, with its 20" radius, has been designed with comfort in mind. But it's not just about playability – short scale basses like this one also offer a distinct musical character: a warm, rich sound with deep, punchy lows. Being an active bass, the Corvette runs on a 9V battery – although they last a while, it's always good to keep a spare ready, just in case.

About Warwick

Based in Markneukirchen, Saxony, Warwick, initially a manufacturer of premium basses, is known today for providing a wide range of music equipment in all sectors of the industry. The product range extends from bass guitars, bass amplifiers and cabinets (in all price brackets), bass strings and accessories, to effects units. In addition to this core business, the Warwick Distribution sales company offers almost everything that bass players, whether of four, six or even more string instruments, could require. Among them are the instruments of the Framus brand, which are remarkable for their consistently high quality. In addition to its headquarters in Markneukirchen, Warwick also has locations in Nashville and Shanghai.

A vintage sound for Blues, Soul, and Rock'n'Roll

The advantages of short scale basses like the Warwick RockBass Corvette Basic 4 Black Short Scale Left-Handed are more than just a matter of mere practicality and size. They've got a sound that's all their own – one with a unique place in music history. Just ask Paul McCartney; perhaps the most celebrated bass player of all time was a left-handed short scale player! That shorty tone is a perfect match for styles like Blues, Rock, '60s Soul, and pretty much anything that might be called vintage. Where a bright, punchy long scale bass can inadvertently push its way to the front of the mix, the sound of a short scale like the Corvette provides a fantastic alternative – especially when fitted with flatwound strings. Of course, it's still perfectly capable of more modern tones, thanks to the active 2-band EQ that lets musicians tweak their highs and lows to taste: With a little practice, they can dial in everything from tight slap sounds to crisp, funky grooves.
