An acoustic bass from the specialists

Warwick Alien Deluxe 4 Hybrid Thinline Fretless, acoustic bass

Warwick has been one of Germany's go-to names for all things low-end for decades nows, and that expertise shines through once again in the Warwick RockBass Alien Deluxe 4 Hybrid Thinline fretless bass guitar. Premium woods with a transparent finish give this unique instrument both its elegant appearance and its expressive sound. And when needed, that sound can be amplified and shaped to taste thanks to the pair of onboard pickups – hence the name Hybrid – and the built-in preamp. The word Thinline is a reference to this instrument's most striking characteristic, namely its notably reduced body depth of only 80mm, which gives it an unheard of playability for an acoustic bass. Other highlights include the fretless ebony fingerboard, the high-end hardware, a handy thumb rest, a generous cutaway, and a gig bag with tools included.

Two's better than one

The top of an acoustic instrument is crucial in giving it a balanced sound: The Warwick Alien Deluxe 4 Hybrid Thinline Fretless has one made from solid AA sitka spruce, a top-tier choice. The neck is crafted from mahogany, while the back and sides are walnut. Musicians have a full two octaves on each string at their disposal, while the tigerstripe ebony fingerboard is complemented by a bridge and thumb rest made from wenge, a strikingly similar wood. The Thinline 4 has a 32" scale length and a nut width of only 38.5mm – slim for an acoustic bass – making it easy on the hands, especially combined with the equally ergonomic slim build. High-quality chrome hardware, produced in-house, includes Warwick's signature adjustable nut and security locks system. And even when the preamp is switched on, the Alien Hybrid remains authentically acoustic, thanks to the piezo pickup under the saddle and the NanoMag pickup in the fingerboard; both pickups and the NFX preamp are from the renowned manufacturer Shadow.

Play it on stage, take it anywhere

Since the late '90s at the very latest, an acoustic or unplugged set has been an essential part of every band's live repertoire. Of course, this means everyone – including the bass player – needs to bring along the right kind of instrument, one that looks the part and sounds it too. Luckily, the Warwick Alien Deluxe 4 Hybrid Thinline passes these tests with flying colours, with its luxe appearance, rich timbre, and that lyrical 'je ne sais quoi' that only a fretless instrument can deliver. The reduced body depth does mean that its sound is somewhat quieter when played acoustically; its ideal habitat is amplified on stage, which is exactly where the two Shadow pickups come in. Its slimline construction is also an advantage in terms of both playability and of course portability. With its attractive pricing, the Deluxe is a strong contender for consideration as an ambitious bassist's second or third instrument – certainly, it'll add something genuinely unique and useful to any collection.

About Warwick

Based in Markneukirchen, Saxony, Warwick, initially a manufacturer of premium basses, is known today for providing a wide range of music equipment in all sectors of the industry. The product range extends from bass guitars, bass amplifiers and cabinets (in all price brackets), bass strings and accessories, to effects units. In addition to this core business, the Warwick Distribution sales company offers almost everything that bass players, whether of four, six or even more string instruments, could require. Among them are the instruments of the Framus brand, which are remarkable for their consistently high quality. In addition to its headquarters in Markneukirchen, Warwick also has locations in Nashville and Shanghai.

How do you amplify an acoustic bass?

Amplifying any acoustic instrument is a serious challenge, especially a high-volume, low-frequency instrument like a bass guitar. Once it reaches a certain volume, unwanted feedback quickly becomes an issue, at frequencies which can even vary depending on the space it's being played in. To tackle this, the Warwick RockBass Alien Deluxe Hybrid 4 Thinline Fretless features a piezo pickup in the bridge and a magnetic pickup at the fingerboard: Rather than capturing sound waves, these pickups sense the vibrations of the top and the strings. Additional adjustments to the sound come courtesy of the Shadow NFX preamp, which offers individual tone controls for each pickup, so the mix between the two sources can be adjusted in minute detail. And if resonance frequencies start become a problem on stage, the preamp's phase switch provides a quick and effective fix.
