A great overall value for the money
blacklava 15.12.2024
I had a Suhr reactive load before, and at first I wasn't too excited by the sound of this Captor. Tried several irs from my collection and couldn't find a sweet spot using my Mini Rectifier head. But after installing the included software (Wall of Sound and Genome), sound finally came to life. Seems that the loadbox has been built with a flat eq curve to be used with several amp simulations. Genome is killer and it's great that they give It for free to the customers. Also the attenuated out Is super useful. For the price there's no competition.

Ok for live use but not that great for recording
Screamer79 07.12.2021
Works great for live use but for recording it has that hi and low cut filter somehow making it pretty midfocused. So with a midfocused amp like mine it becomes too midrangy and stale. But still a good budget option if you cant afford more expensive ones..

Simple but effective

does the job well. Pretty sure there are more expensive devices that give the last 5% of tone on top but this is perfectly fine...

Decent loadbox

Any home studio with neighbours or flatmates to take care of will invariably need an attenuator and/or loadbox of some kind. The Torpedo Captor serves this purpose well, although it is not as flexible as some alternatives, in the sense that it comes with a fixed Ohm correspondence and you will need to acquire the exact one for your current needs, without the possibility to adjust the Ohms if you change your amp. Also, the cab sim is OK, but it is not the best, and there is only one cab sim included, so you are stuck with it. This I suspect is to invite you to invest in their separate cab sim box.

A nice detail is the inclusion of Wall of Sound software license, if that is something that would help you decide.

Great unit, makes it possible to play your valve amp at home using 3rd party cabinet impulses very easy using the wall of sound or another plugin, Great for touring with a small unit connected to something like mooer Cab sim. The fan only spins when signal is fed to the unit, makes a bit of noise. There is a noticeable sound coming from the unit , that i find normal because the loadbox is "eating" all the valve amp signal and transferring that to heat and sound. Sounds like a old PC speaker. Aprt from that , great great unit for the price. Two notes has excellent product on the market.

Nice compromise

Great device for silent practice with tube amp.
Sound is acceptable with IRs. However, any loadbox is not that good as a real speaker.

Nice procuct with some flaws

I gave 4 stars in features because, It would have been great if it would have TS jack output (besides TRS) so that you could use it before devices that don't work that with TRS. But thats a small issue.

The biggest problems I have with hiss. The TRS Line output is unusable, I'm considering sending for warranty check. So I bought XLR to jack adapter and now I'm using the XLR output, which still has some hiss. Maybe hiss is because of adapter or something, but I don't know I'm blaming it on this device. So I give 3 stars to quality.

Still besides the flaws, I find it useful, the hiss from XLR output can be dealt with. If I will get the hiss problem solved through warranty or by some changes in my setup, it will be perfect piece for a studio. Really useful tool if you have tube amp.

Absolute life-saver for home recording

I use this for recording demos at home – connecting my amp head to the Torpedo, which is connected to my audio interface.
Slap a blend of impulse responses on there, and you've got a great guitar-track!
The Captor also has a -20dB out for speaker cabinets, meaning you can attenuate your signal.
It also has built-in cabinet simulator for its output, but I recommend you skip that and tweak your own IRs in software on your computer instead (unless you're plugging straight into a PA or some such).
