Evaluation Rabel tenor medieval

José81, 24.12.2012
Design and construction
The construction does not live up to the specialized luthiers but value for money is not bad.

The design of rabel centroeuropeo is very good and is very beautiful.

The exterior finish is correct but the interior is somewhat rough (burrs in the ears and inner marks of the emptying gouges of the piriform box) which is to the detriment of sound.

The bridge is too thick and coarse what subtracts sound volume.

Strings
The strings are of very low quality. It is impossible to tune them in CGD because they are too loose and the sound is not good. They have to be tuned in GDA so that it starts to sound since they require more tension.

Arc
The bow is fine and performs perfectly. In this case subjected to the style of gamba violas. Very accomplished the look of the time.

My experience
I have experienced changing the bridge for a viola to do the test and with violin gut strings (Aquila) with what earns quite a bit in quality and some volume.

The sound of the first two strings is what is expected of this type of instrument. Not bad.
The bass string has some harmonic problem that makes it sound coarse and dull. I think it would be necessary to put a soul, similar to the one of the violins, that connects the harmonic lid with the bottom of the box to gain sound strength. Possibly also a harmonic bar. Although they are not medieval resources, the present needs in a concert hall, church, etc. Require greater volume of sound.

Because of its size it is not comfortable to touch the shoulder or chest (as opposed to the soprano and tall rabeles), having to be touched vertically, like the prawn viols. In this position it is comfortable and works well.

Finally the addition of gut frets, to the taste of the interpreter, can help to make a sound more round, as well as help in the fingering, since the distances vary enough depending on the place of placement of the bridge. If you want violin type distances the bridge should be placed almost above the whole of the ears. Putting it a little lower you get distances of viola and the lower down the bigger they will be. All this without affecting the sound that remains the same, whether the bridge is higher or lower.

conclusion
Ideal for accompaniments of medieval music to double strings (cantigas) and little complex melodies. Not recommended for solos of medium-high difficulty in which it is better to use a fidula (medieval arch vihuela).

I bought this tenor-rebec because I wanted a strong dark fidel-sound and not this grandiose violin-length of the small vines. The price is just right: good quality, but not so expensive that it hurts when you put the project in the sand.

The rebec is too big to play in the arm, but the "da gamba" style is really very pleasant and makes learning a lot easier because you can simply squint at the fingerboard when you are practicing or overly embarrassed in the ministry.

For a really good instrument you should plan some changes before buying

First of all, I have calculated and installed frets. For guitar strings, the fingerboard is too steep. So I painted painter's crepe black and cut into fine strips. These were then glued to the fingerboard. Then brought to the building market and adhesive film, cut these and glued as protection over the bundled fingerboard - perfect!

In the case of the string holder the holes for the Feintuner must be enlarged (Dremel or similar). The Feintuner work like butter! Vortex soap is another secret tip that has stunned me as a result. The bridge must be ground by hand. When it is finished, you have a wonderfully low string position and a more powerful sound.

After several experiments, the viola gut strings of Efrano sound comprehensively and absolutely wonderful in the play behavior. CDA I have voted on DAD. That fits best with my voice and I can accompany my singing (Bordun!). Even after more than half a year, there are no signs of wear during daily use.

Conclusion: In general, I think the idea is good, solid basic instruments, which can be upgraded as required. This could make Thomann so synonymous with Drehleiern, Fideln and other old instruments so. The biggest obstacle to learning traditional instruments is usually the price.
