Useful instrument
CJK , 06.05.2015
The processing of the cavaquinho is largely in order. From the outside, you can not put anything on it, however, the view in the soundhole, that the processing is only outwardly clean. On the inside, the floor is not smoothly planed and in some places the glue swells out. But well, how an instrument looks inside is probably not so important.

The sound is also fine, just a bit thin in the depths, but that is probably inevitable with such a small instrument. In any case, the Cavaquinho sounds distinctly different from a ukulele or a mandolin and thus allows me a tonic change.

As with all Cavaquinhos, the strings are quite low, which makes it easier to grasp, but sometimes, when the strings are strong, they cause certain snarling secondary noises. And in order to arrive at the solo playing against two guitars, one must already be quite strong; I play the Cavaquinho as usual in Brazil with plectrum. If you play whole chords, you can also play with your fingernails, with the unisoned Melodiespiel sounds to me personally the plucking but a bit too thin.

The collar purity of the Cavaquinho is largely in order, if one grasps precisely, which is not so simple with the small fingerboard. However, if a capo is used, the intonation is quickly quite wrong, since it would then be necessary to make a decision.

Anyone interested in buying a Cavaquinho may be wondering what the difference between a Portuguese and a Brazilian cavaquinho is. Well, with the Brazilian, the body is slightly larger. The essential difference, however, is in the strings and mood. In the Portuguese variant, the tuning is d``g`h`d``, with all the strings having the same thickness. The Brazilian version is d'g`h`d`` tuned, so the scale is down a fourth. In addition, the strings vary according to the different mood also different thickness, which seems to me somehow more meaningful.

There is no bag to the Brazilian cavaquinho; However, the body is as large as a concert uule, and the neck is slightly shorter, which should fit bags and cases for concerto guitars in general.

For beginners

I bought several of these cavaquinho to lend them to my beginner students. As these are the cheapest of the net and I used to be satisfied with Thomann products I got started.
At the sound level it's okay, it's not screaming like other cavaquinho first-rate.
The handle is quite wide which is handy to place its fingers against the first box is a little difficult to make sound. It is a choice of adjustment also: by moving a little the strings of the handle it sounds better and it does not curl. It remains a fairly playable instrument overall.
By cons the mechanics are really bad quality as well as the strings provided with. So it remains the possibility to change all that to have a better instrument.
Overall therefore for the small price one can have a first cavaquinho fairly playable and that does not break the ears!
