Compact, solid and beautiful with slight weaknesses in operation
maXXX, 02.12.2009
The Miditech Midistart Music 25 is at first glance a spartan master keyboard. Where other manufacturers have a wide range of controllers, the small Miditech features an almost naked surface: just three buttons (Shift, Octace +/-), a joystick for pitch bend and modulation as well as a freely assignable slider controller. 25 standard-sized, velocity-sensitive keys, which, in conjunction with the Shift key, take over additional control functions. The whole is housed in a 38 cm wide housing made of aluminum - it can hardly be more compact.

The value of the processing is certainly the big plus. The small keyboard looks robust and the black version is quite elegant. With a weight of more than 2 kg, it has a pleasantly secure position, it is not in any case the impression that it is blown from the table at the smallest pull.

Lightweight prints are available at the keyboard. It can be played very well, but with a strong pressure, the keys give a bit. However, there is hardly any reason to exert greater pressure because the keyboard does not have an aftertouch function.

If you want to use your Masterkeyboard as a switching and control center for your entire electronic instruments, the Miditech Music 25 is of course at the wrong address because there are simply too few direct control options. If you want to control individual parameters of your synth-expander in real-time, here is something missing. But such a claim would also be out of place here.

Even the small joystick for pitch bend and modulation is quite easy to use due to its quite short control distance and can hardly be dosed exactly. With the given dimensions, however, it would not be easier with corresponding wheels. This is just a concession to compactness.

However, the two existing buttons for a transposition up to +/- three octaves are to be emphasized. This is very helpful with a keyboard range of only two octaves. The keyboard's keyboard dynamics can be adjusted to the personal taste or sound by four different presets. In addition, there are ten storage locations for user setups, which should be sufficient for the practice.

The Miditech Midistart Music 25 can be connected to the computer via USB without installing additional drivers (Mac / Windows). A USB cable is included. Unfortunately you have to get a power supply yourself.

Overall a solid and usable device if you do not need much more than a good midi keyboard for connecting to computer or timeless synthesizers. Control and programming functions can be realized by the double assignment of the keyboard, but sometimes somewhat cumbersome, especially since there is no display for possible feedback messages. So, before you buy, you should think carefully about what you really want to have: functional diversity or spartan simplicity in a robust and compact housing.

Good & cheap
Peter J. M., 08.07.2010
The Music 25 is for me the ideal combination of practicality, robustness and space savings. Whether to import or transpose step sequences in the MFB Synth Lite II, control the arpeggiate in the Doepfer Dark Energy or simply to improvise, it performs its duties perfectly. After a quick look into the manual, I was able to put it away, since the operation goes by itself, so to speak.

Even with the little joystick I became friends after initial skepticism; is just a matter of practice. The keyboard is cheap, but not from the processing ago. The sturdy metal case with a relatively high weight makes a very robust impression, unlike the cardboard. Unfortunately, no power supply is included, but it is also via USB power (the cable is there). Otherwise there is nothing else to complain about ...

Meanwhile, I use the Music 25 mainly for transposing the MFB-Step64, although it is actually under-challenged, since all the controller functions are not used. But I still have my good old CME UF5 ...

Supplement 08.10.13
To save space, I have exchanged my Midistart 3 for another Music 25 to drive my Doepfer MFB mini-modular system. The connection for the power supply is now gone, but fortunately there are no changes in the hardware. This was decisive against the labile parts of Alesis, M-Audio etc.

Why are there no longer good, cheap keyboards in the 25s section? - The robustness of the Music 25 with pads from the Akai and Wheels & Knobs from the Novation for 100, -EUR - that would be awesome ...
