Lindy Fralin Baseplate
I have recently installed a Kloppmann ST60 RW set in my Roadworn 60s Strat. The previously installed Amber Power Blues pickups were too dominant in the upper mids at about 1.5 kHz. The Klopp men sound more open and balanced. Only the bridge pickup was overdrive with me somewhat thin.
I had already read about Baseplates and also saw that there is a Kloppmann set with baseplate at the bridge pickup. So I decided to try such a record once.
On the Thomann side I was quickly found. 20¤ are a bit steep price for a tiny piece of steel, but unfortunately, with some "exotic niche products" such prices are the order of the day.
The baseplate came in the small plastic bag without installation instructions. It is magnetically firmly attached to the underside of the pickup. In some forums it was recommended to fix the plate additionally with a drop of glue. But I did not do that.
In the middle of the baseplate is soldered a short piece of cable (pushback cloth wire), which must be soldered to ground. You can also do this directly at the soldering point of the pickup, but it was too risky to solder on the thin enamel coil wire, so I chose instead the lid of the volume pot. Unfortunately the cable of the baseplate was too short. I also did not want to chip, so I soldered a longer piece. Unfortunately, when the old cable was removed, a part of the wax layer with which the baseplate was covered was unfortunately liquefied. Then new strings on it and the listeners unlocked!
The sound difference is not dramatic, but it is quite audible. The pickup gains something from basses and deep mids. That heights are cut, I could not establish. The basic character is retained. Ie the pickup does not suddenly mutate through the baseplate to the Tele Pickup or the High Gain Monster.
Conclusion: The baseplate does pretty much exactly what I wanted: A little more body, but no overfatting.
