Outstanding sounds

MIDIAkkordeonMarko, 29.06.2017
In advance, I use the device with 2 MIDI accordions. So my taste for sound colors has always met Ketron, so synonymous with the new SD generation. The slogan best natural sounds is true, in my opinion, completely.
Ketron has really made great progress in terms of user friendliness with the new SD models. The new touch screen allows intuitive operation and is fully up-to-date. The accordion player is now also supported with great settings for the manulle game, because there are 2 modes: manual game and game with Arranger.
There are numerous settings for sound colors on the Arrangers side for manual play. So you can lay out up to 3 sound colors in a preset (user sound) and define a 2-voice as required. There are many great parameters that can be easily maintained and leave hardly any wishes open. You can also hear the sound immediately.
The Arrangerpuren can be attributed to sound, that is super. There is also a so-called Moddeling with which you can insert many existing sequences into the rhythm. The rhythms can be edited with an external sequencer software (optionally from various manufacturers), whereby you only have to change the file transmission.
The folk music accompaniment colors are not so successful, so the tuba is very thin and does not sound really good, and guitar sample chords and baritones are missing completely, but this is not the main focus of the device, as the overall character rather into the popular music dance and partymusics Goes and looks modern.
I use mostly a guitar bass, which comes then really well for the national music. I find the solo instruments such as wind instruments and accordions again class.
The rhythms offer everything you need as an entertainer, the rock area could be a bit better equipped, but you can download from the Ketron the X4 rhythms in the SD *. Pat format and then convert with the SD40 and adjust something. With these approx. 170 additional rhythms, usable rock rhythms are also included.
In terms of stability I can not understand the problems that many users with the SD7 have. The SD 40 has probably a better processor and runs with me very stable, I have not yet seen a crash and really long tested.
The sound conversion is strong and powerful, I find the overall sound very good and much better than the little brother the SD 1000 (although the price is already good).
The time of about 45 seconds to boot up (booting) the device is still to be borne, but is due to the complexity of the system and therefore I do not negatively.

positive
+ Usually excellent sound colors, close to the original (as I mean the buying point next to the good usability)
+ Touch display with mostly intuitive, easy operation
+ Easy to transport (small dimensions, approx. 2kg weight)
+ Many processing options
+ Arranger with great, lively rhythms and settings
+ Complete registrations stored in 4 banks (I have created a bank for manual play and one for the Arrangerbet)
+ User Voices (Sound Combinations) and User Styles
+ Expandable with SD cards or USB devices and connected to computer via USB

negative
- MIDI Thru jack delivers, if you use Keyboard Midi In no signal (when using the GM In jack goes), so you usually have an external MIDI distributor.
- Balg dynamics when the Arranger is used, you have to get used to it and adjust the way of playing. Can not assign midi channel for Arranger.
- Accordion features for manual play in the menu and not in the registrations themselves (somewhat inconvenient).
- Folk music Begleitsounds rather weak (no sample chords, baritones are missing)
- For Techno only a few Synthesizerounds (but is not the main focus of the device)

Conclusion:
There will never be the perfect device, but the requirements of the individual musicians are too far apart. I would therefore not overestimate the criticisms here, since these can be seen as suggestions for improvement. With these peculiarities one can live.
The Ketron SD40 Musikexpander is a really recommendable device for many musical genres with outstanding, natural, lively sounds and a touch-screen. The price / performance ratio is okay.

Purchased to replace a WK2, I am satisfied with the evolution of the equipment.
Only downside (word of musician), the documentation is very limited. You have to search the net for information found most often in English ... a pity for the uninitiated either the arrangers or the English
