Nano amp head for metal and high gain

The new range of Spirit Nano Heads from the amp specialists at Hughes & Kettner are a trio of ultra-compact guitar tops based on the successful H&K Black Spirit: They all deliver an authentic and dynamic sound that's almost indistinguishable from a real tube amp. The Spirit of Metal, more specifically, has almost endless reserves of gain for all the genres that demand it, including of course metal in its many forms. It's equally at home in rehearsals or on stage, thanks to its powerful output of up to 50W into a 4-ohm load. With a headphone connection and an aux-in, this little black box is also ideal for practicing in at home, while the line-out makes it easy to record directly to a computer or laptop.

A Spirit with a bionic heart

At the heart of the Spirit Nano amps is the newly developed "bionic" Spirit Tone Generator, which reproduces the complicated analogue workings of a tube circuit in exacting detail. This technology combines the sound and dynamics of a tube amp in a genuine analogue circuit that's small enough to fit into the Spirit of Metal's phenomenally compact housing: It measures just 190x90x90mm – not much larger than a thick paperback – and weighs just 1.1kg, or less than 2.5lbs. In addition to a gain pot, a tone control, and a master volume, the control panel features a control labelled "Sagging", which can be used to saturate the power amp even at low volumes, giving the dynamics a really noticeable kick. This ensures a punchy, articulate low end and bold, driving riffs, or a deep foundation for soaring, heavily distorted leads. Either way, anything played through a Spirit amp will also sound great on headphones, as Hughes & Kettner have wisely integrated the cab simulation functions of their legendary Red Box here.

The lightweight sparring partner for heavy metal

Beginners and experts alike will have a lot of fun with the Spirit of Metal. This extremely compact top offers an unusually "tubey" sound with terrific dynamics, all for a genuinely fair price. It's versatile, too: Thanks to its AUX in and headphone output, it's the perfect companion for practicing at home – and with its 50W power amp it'll fill any venue with chunky, responsive riffs, lots of low end, and soaring leads in the style of the high-gain greats. Beginners will feel right at home because the Spirit of Metal is so easy to use; equally, pro musicians will appreciate the compact dimensions, maybe even enough to leave the big guns at home for their next gig!

About Hughes & Kettner

Hughes & Kettner is one of the largest German suppliers of guitar and bass amplifiers. Founded in 1984 by Hans and Lothar Stamer under the name Stamer Musikanlagen GmbH, the manufacturer from St. Wendel in the Saarland can boast of its numerous innovations. For example, its first venture into the field of guitar amplifiers, the ASR64 from 1986, was the first programmable amplifier in the world. Thanks to its compact format, the Cream Machine of 1987 can be counted among the very first mini tube amplifiers. Equally influential were the Red Box analogue speaker simulation, the first six-channel amplifier (the Triamp), and the ZenTera, which used modelling technology in an integrated amplifier even before Line 6.

A day in the life

There's time for a quick bedroom practice session in the morning, with the backing track on headphones via aux-in; band rehearsals at lunchtime, hooked up to a 4x12" cab; and the little black box is still on stage in the evening… the Spirit of Metal can handle it all without breaking a sweat. What's more, the fact that this incredible nano top comes fitted with a simple line-out means its versatile rock sounds can be used for studio recordings without the need for complicated microphone set-ups. And wherever it's used, thanks to H&K’s bionic Spirit Tone Generator, the Spirit of Metal generates a sound and playing feel that comes incredibly close to that of a real tube amp.
