Music furniture for beginners

The Hemingway DP-501 MKII is a digital piano with 88 weighted synthetic keys and a 64-voice polyphony. In addition to the two acoustic piano sounds, it offers fourteen other sounds that can be split and combined, as well as sixteen demo songs. Due to its extremely low price, the piano is particularly appropriate for beginners who don't want to spend a fortune on their first piano. Guaranteeing a particularly authentic playing feel, the DP-501 MKII is equipped with a hammer mechanism. The DP-501 MKII is indeed a remarkable bargain!

Many possibilities

The sixteen sounds offered by the Hemingway DP-501 MKII are played through the built-in speakers (20 watts each). The blue LCD screen shows the currently selected sound and offers additional setting options. A simple reverb, a chorus effect, and a metronome (with a tempo tap button) are also on board. The sound can be adjusted using two controls (treble and bass) and also reproduced via the stereo RCA output. The three pedals integrated at the base are connected with the bottom of the digital piano via a cable, as is the external power supply. The rest of the ports are located on the front side. The DP-501 MKII cuts a good figure and, on top of that, it comes with a retractable keyboard cover.

Ideal for jamming

Each letter abbreviation in the title of the Hemingway DP-501 stands for the colour variant. Accordingly, the piano is available in anthracite ("AT"), in rosewood ("RW"), i.e. in a timber finish, and in white ("WH"). It has an internal MIDI recorder and a USB MIDI recorder (USB-to-device) as well as a MIDI-out and a USB-to-host. In addition to the stereo RCA input, there is a Bluetooth USB adapter that can be used to wirelessly connect a smartphone or tablet, for example. The player device's signal is then reproduced through the built-in loudspeakers, which is useful when listening to songs or simply for jamming.

About Hemingway

Thomann’s in-house brand Hemingway makes digital pianos with numerous features that provide beginners with "a lot of instrument" at very acceptable cost. The pianos, made in China, are high-quality models and include a variety of features. Hemingway's digital pianos are among the most popular options available in the lower price bracket. What is more, their appearance and practicality will satisfy the requirements of many pianists, well beyond beginner level.

Hey, teachers, don't leave them keys alone!

The velocity-sensitive keys can be set to three levels: Normal, hard, and soft. When the level is set to "hard", the keys only have to be played lightly to achieve higher volumes, while the "soft" setting means they have to be played harder. In addition to the split and layer mode, the Hemingway DP-501 MKII also has a twin mode. With this mode, the instrument is "divided" into two, whereby both parts are provided with an identical sound. In this way, two pianists can play side by side in the same octave range, which is particularly interesting for piano lessons. And the two headphone outputs are further proof that Hemingway's intention is to get people making music together.

I`am not a professional musician, but the instrument fully satisfies my needs. You might check the factory settings, because the key sensitivity by default is low.

This piano is suitable for beginners but you need to change the settings because the default sound is extremely low and you lose notes.
