Harley Benton "Edelbass"

SigiZ, 24.12.2011
After I discovered this optical 5-string jewelery in the catalog I thought: For the little money so a part - that you have to try.

After the bass arrived and unpacked, my critically trained look wandered along the bass. The surface is very beautifully textured, the wood looks almost raw - just a touch of satinfinish. The oval inlays from Abalone look very beautiful.

The overall processing makes a good impression. The neck is well in the hand, the first runs - dry played - show that the basic setting already fits quite well. The wood resonates very nicely. The mahogany makes the basic character warm and dark.

The first weakness is revealed. The strings color the fingers black and sound lifeless. Well, that is understandable at the price and the way from China. The bridge (individual riders) and mechanics are black and functional - they do not look quite as valuable as in the picture. But also with it is to be reckoned - one look only times in the catalog which single traveler cost .... For the price is more than ok.

Equipment: Two ceramic single coils, four rotary knobs, no switch. The electronics are active. The front lower knob determines the volume, the knob above it controls the balance of the PUs, the lower is the bass, the upper is the height setting. The sound possibilities are sufficient, however, that the PUs are assembled very tightly together, but there are not so extreme differences as in the case of mounting closer to the neck, resp. The bridge. If, for example, you take the Precision with its one PU centered, the two are slightly above and below it. Due to the design (SC), it is therefore sensitive to hum.

Neck & Bünde: The 7-piece neck looks very nice and feels good. The frets - what should I say - are a bit raw worked. The crowning was apparently executed only superficially. For this the dressing has been relatively good, there is no rattling when the string is comfortable. And this is almost more important to me than high-polish but irregularly high cuffs. The ends of the waistbands are polished in any case, since nothing cuts your fingers while walking along the neck. A cradle had a small ridge at the fingerboard, only visually unpleasant - no problem, briefly fingerboard and with the small three-pronged file removed. The octave purity has to be adapted to my specimen - the single rider construction is somewhat friemelig, since the string is released and the rider has to be moved manually. The position can then be fixed with Allen screws.

Opening the electronics compartment again shows a good processing, the back of the cover is with copper foil !! Lined, paint the interior with graphite lacquer. Bravo! Especially for the price class. The EQ is permanently encapsulated, the wiring cleared up. The Potis are small types, the Poti for the balance of the PUs is a double pot. Bass, treble and balance pots have a resting middle position.

So, the sound test: When connected to the amp, nothing happens at first. A slight wobbling at the jack socket causes an ugly crash. Almost a KO! Well, have still a zargenbuchse (unfortunately only chrome) in the Bastelkiste and these quickly swapped. This plug does not make a valuable impression. Somehow the wrong place to make the first real lapsus, you notice this first. For me this was not a problem, but - as far as often occurs - this should be for many the place where thought is: That is not at all. The problem is really very easy to solve with a soldering iron and a clever socket.

After replacing the saddle bushes, I was finally able to test the sound. A round, warm tone. Bass and treble controls work well. The balance confirms the visual impression. In the extremes (upper / lower PU) the sound difference is not huge. The bridgeside is a bit pointed, more giddy - the half-sided ewtas warmer. It is noticeable that in the middle position the pressure in the bass increases enormously, the external positions bring an almost growling sound behavior. The overall impression is a pleasant, warm tone with sufficient flexibility. Well, the old strings are still on, I'm sure that new strings will do very well to the sound.

Total Impression:
The features I rate with four stars, as the flexibility is limited, but is sufficient.
The sound is very good - just the price - so full score.
The processing is - again one has to see the price - apart from the fret and the frame bushes very well, nevertheless I have to draw off because of these shortcomings a star. More deduction would not be appropriate in my eyes in view of the price.

Overall Impression. Very very much bass for small money. Who live with the expected small defects resp. This can fix itself, gets for the money a really beautiful and valuable bass. You have to remember the price always, because for the money you do not even get the parts. These small flaws can (for me) not cover the overall very good processing.

Bridge by string !! A little light on the screws

After adjustment, handle, bridge, bridges.

No shielding of the mass, varnish on the easels,
Micro and the active system lacks definition, even with good strings.

Good price :) !! It allows to perfect itself in adjustment and in welding!
