Great sounding beginner banjo

The composite looks good, the wood too. It sounds great.
I got this banjo in the key of A because I like to play 2 finger thumb lead/old time/fiddle tunes and they're often in A or D and I can downtune to the "regular" key of G without problem.

Things to keep in mind: one, if you want an arm rest, there's only one that fits (I asked Gold Tone myself), the Little Mountain Armrest (which is nowhere to be found). The Gold Tone one that says "fits all" does not!
Two, banjo's are loud. Stuff something behind the head. Easier and cheaper than ordering a mute (I did not like how the Iucci mute makes the banjo sound like a guitar, it's like all the overtones are gone).

Just right for me.

I always found my previous banjo quite a reach, mainly playing guitars and mandolins. This one is so comfortable. My old was not an open back and was therefore loud, too loud for my voice in an acoustic situation. I like the resin tone ring, and the neck devoid of frets where it joins the body for frailing style playing. I also prefer the style of machine heads to the planetary ones. For me for folk sessions it's ideal in sound and size.
