"The Big One"

The Genelec 8361 A is the largest model in the "The Ones" series, in which the Finnish manufacturer focuses on active three-way studio monitors with a coaxial design. Key advantages of this construction include extremely precise imaging and a wide sweet spot. Considering its extensive feature set, the 8361 A remains relatively compact despite its weight of just under 32kg. Whether used in stereo operation or in larger immersive formats, multiple monitors can be networked and controlled via the accompanying GLM software (Genelec Loudspeaker Manager). The separately available GLM set, consisting of a network adapter and a measurement microphone, enables automatic calibration of the speakers using DSP-based SAM technology (Smart Active Monitor).

Intelligent design

The studio monitors in the "The Ones" series combine a coaxial midrange and tweeter unit with two oval woofers, which are concealed behind the front baffle that incorporates a large waveguide. The two woofers are positioned symmetrically around the coaxial element and behave acoustically like a single large woofer. As the flagship model of the series, the 8361 A delivers a total output power of 1000W, provided by three Class D amplifiers for the bass (750W), midrange (150W), and tweeter (150W). With a maximum output of 118dB SPL and an extended frequency response of 36Hz to 20kHz (at +/-1.5dB), the 8361 A is well-equipped for nearfield to midfield applications. An adjustable IsoPod for horizontal and vertical placement is included in the scope of delivery. Suitable wall or ceiling mounts and stand adapters are available separately.

Networked monitoring system

The Genelec 8361 A is an excellent choice for professional users seeking a powerful, precise yet still relatively compact three-way monitor for nearfield and midfield use. The manufacturer specifies an ideal listening distance of up to five metres. In theory, up to 80 speakers can be networked using the supplied RJ45 cables. The accompanying GLM software then adapts the entire system to the acoustics of the respective room via single or multi-point measurements (GLM set required), automatically aligning level, frequency response, and time-of-flight differences. Alternatively, a simpler set of sound controls is available at the rear of the device for operation without software or networking.

About Genelec

Genelec was founded in 1976 by Ilpo Martikainen. It grew from a family business into one of the world's leading manufacturers of professional studio and broadcasting loudspeakers. To this day, Genelec's loudspeakers are manufactured exclusively in Finland. Genelec offers performance-oriented, neutral-sounding loudspeakers and subwoofer systems for audio professionals and sound enthusiasts, and a combination of innovative technology and design ensure that the range of products is continuously improving. The company is committed to sustainable development and environmental awareness. In 2018, Genelec was awarded the Pro Sound "Company of the Year" award. Genelec speakers are favourites of such recording industry veterans as Obie O'Brien, Michael Carnes, and David Reitzas, as well as of producers like Hardwell, Keith Ross, and Vini Vici.

Ideal for constructing immersive systems

Genelec's "The Ones" series uses a sophisticated internal DSP system for filters, limiters, and further signal processing. On the input side, both an analogue input and a digital AES/EBU input in XLR format are provided, with the latter supporting sample rates of up to 192kHz. In addition, a purely digital AES/EBU output is provided at the rear of the device to loop the signal to additional speakers. For larger immersive monitoring systems, it is possible, for example, to use two 8361 A monitors as L/R speakers and combine them with smaller models from "The Ones" series as surround and/or overhead speakers. Subwoofers from the 7300 series are ideal for this purpose.
