Sturdy case for 6 and 12-string acoustics

Granted, in most cases a simple gig bag is perfectly adequate for transporting a guitar, but sometimes you need a bit more protection. For instance, when the instrument vanishes among boxes and cases inside the tour bus, or if it needs to be stored under optimum protective conditions over a long period of time. The Gator Hardshell Case Dreadnought 6+12 with its extremely durable plywood construction and PVC covering made of humidity-resistant Tolex, is an affordable way to transport and store 6 and 12-string dreadnought acoustic guitars safely.

Gator 6 & 12-String Dreadnought Case opened

Custom-built for dreadnoughts

The Gator product range offers a large number of custom-made cases for almost every type of guitar. The Hardshell Case Dreadnought 6+12 was developed specifically for bulky dreadnought-shape guitars and fits instruments of this type perfectly. A sturdy handle has been attached to ensure that the case is perfectly balanced when carried, while the arched lid also provides the best possible protection for the instrument's top. The interior contains a padded and velvety-soft inner lining, providing both a perfect fit and optimum protection from scratches thanks to its soft surface. Moreover, the case contains a storage compartment for important utensils such as strings, picks, or tuners. Thanks to the four metal feet on the bottom edge, the case can be placed upright as well as propped up against a wall.

Affordable case with a hard shell and soft core

The Hardshell Case Dreadnought 6+12 is suitable for all musicians with steel-string guitars who travel a lot and attach great importance to transporting their delicate instruments as safely as possible. Although hardly more expensive than a decent gig bag, this case offers considerably better protection and is the ideal companion when heading to lessons and the rehearsal room as well as for tours and gigs. The sturdy handle facilitates transport in an optimally balanced position, while the velvety-soft inner lining effectively protects the instrument from scratches.

About Gator

Gator, or Gator Cases, is an American firm founded in 2000 by father-daughter team Jerry Freed and Crystal Morris in Tampa, Florida. Initially, Gator began with a modest range of moulded plastic guitar cases. From there, they expanded the product line to include case and bag solutions for the whole field of instruments and equipment. A wide variety is covered: Instruments, microphones, and all aspects of live performance, including lighting equipment. At the same time, products for other media areas such as photo and video are also available. All products are made of high-quality plastics, wood, textiles, and EVA materials. The Gator companies also include flight case manufacturer Viking Cases and guitar strap manufacturer Levy's Leathers Ltd., as well as Gator Rackworks and Gator Frameworks.

Ideal for the road or for safe storage

The Hardshell Case Dreadnought 6+12 shows its potential mainly when transport requires a bit of rough handling. The shock-resistant outer shell made of multi-layer plywood with its durable Tolex covering can easily withstand even the hardest of knocks. If, on the other hand, the instrument is to be stored for long periods of time in the cellar or rehearsal room where conditions are not ideal, the case also rises effortlessly to the occasion. In this way, a guitar can be stored for extended periods and well protected from external influences, embedded in soft plush. Naturally, the Hardshell Case Dreadnought 6+12 guitar case is also equipped with a lock to prevent unauthorised access.

Good quality case
MGokce 29.07.2021
Before I bought it, I was doubtful about whether the guitar would fit in the case. I bought the case asking many questions to the Thomann customer representatives. They said "yes, they will fit". But I was still doubtful. But when I received the guitar and case, I saw that my doubts were nonsense. The guitar perfectly fitted in the case very good. By the way, thank you very much to Thoman customer representatives.
The look of the case is very nice. It has a good balance to carry the guitar.
I preferred this case especially because it is suitable for 12-string dreadnought guitars. If one day I buy a 12-string dreadnought, I can easily use this case for also 12 strings.
There's also a compartment for the accessories such as picks, tuner, replacement strings, etc. It looks and feels to me more expensive than its price.
Happy with that purchase.

Sturdy and great value!

Gator cases are very well made but won’t break the bank. If you’ve got a precious instrument it’s good to know it’s well protected. The only downside is the position of the handle which unbalances the weight.

Yet another testament to Thomann service and quality.

I initially made an inaccurate guess at the case my wife's guitar would need. This Gator Hardshell was recommended after sending measurements of the guitar to Thomann's experts. The speedy and efficient return and re-purchase left us with a case that has served us well. The case has stood up to many years of loading and unloading on frequent round trips, whether to the local Thursday night gig (when there were such things) or further afield. This case definitely does the job it was built for. And with the helpful and courteous service taken into account - another Thomann class act.

L
Review for Yamaha FG830 owners
Lza_ 14.06.2026
I bought this for my Yamaha FG830 to compare with the Yamaha CPX case I originally bought for it. This is of a better build quality, better materials, slightly better fit (the CPX case seems a little too snug in my opinion) and has good heel support too. The latches are also far smoother and the locking latch works very well, although one of them is a little misaligned and therefore just slightly annoying to close.

There is a little too much room for the guitar to move side to side, so keep this in mind in case you're looking to buy this to transport your guitar regularly. However, the headstock/tuners won't touch the sides of the case regardless of how much it moves and I'm sure a little bubble wrap or extra cloth will fix it in case you're unwilling to dish out far more money on a fitted case.

Its fits the FG830 well enough and overall, there really isn't much to complain about especially at this price point. Just keep in mind the aforementioned side to side movement in case it's something that may put you off. For home storage and a little moving around, however, it's perfect.

The misaligned latch is the only reason I gave 4 stars for the quality.
