Monitoring with precision and power

The Focal Alpha Twin Evo active 2.5-way monitor is the flagship of the French manufacturer's Evo range, designed for more demanding production environments. Its two 6.5" Slatefiber composite woofers – a non-woven recycled carbon fibre material made in Focal's own Saint-Étienne facility – work alongside a centrally positioned 1" inverted aluminium dome tweeter, covering a frequency range from 38Hz to 22kHz with a clear and focused sound image across the full range. Each driver is powered by its own Class D amplifier, resulting in a combined output of 130W and a maximum SPL of 108dB. With adjustable input sensitivity and shelf filters for both bass and treble, the Alpha Twin Evo adapts to different studio environments without complex configuration. At the same time, it represents a comparatively affordable entry point into 2.5-way monitoring, offering the detail and extended low end typically associated with larger systems without moving into significantly higher price ranges.

Connectivity and adaptability

The Focal Alpha Twin Evo is designed for horizontal placement, with a selector switch that defines which of the two drivers handles full-range midrange and which rolls off to bass only – essential when setting up a stereo pair, with the midrange driver positioned on the inside for a stable central image. Its horizontal footprint is substantial and worth accounting for before purchase. Alongside balanced inputs via a 6.35mm jack and XLR, the speaker also features an unbalanced RCA connection, covering both professional studio setups and consumer-level equipment without additional adapters. The cabinet uses a bass reflex design to support low-end response, and manual room adjustment allows ±6dB of bass adjustment below 250Hz and ±3dB of treble adjustment above 4.5kHz – enough range to compensate for most room placement issues, though the full 6dB bass boost should be used with caution given the available amplifier headroom.

Producers and studio setups

The Focal Alpha Twin Evo is aimed at experienced producers and engineers who need a precise and reliable monitoring system for detailed mixing and production work. Its 2.5-way design and increased headroom make it particularly well suited to complex, bass-heavy material and high-volume monitoring – the extended low-end response renders audible low-frequency elements that smaller two-way monitors might miss entirely. The trade-off is a bass alignment that prioritises bandwidth over precision, which can make fine judgements about kick drum and bass character more demanding; the onboard LF EQ helps rein this in where needed. In project studios and more advanced studio environments, it serves as a dependable central reference for evaluating balance, dynamics, and stereo imaging. As an active monitor, it combines amplification and speaker in a single unit – there is no digital input, which is worth noting for setups that rely on USB or AES/EBU connectivity.

About Focal

A French manufacturer based in Saint-Étienne, Focal has been active in the hi-fi sector since 1979. Alongside a core focus on speaker drivers and high-fidelity loudspeakers, the company's portfolio has also expanded since 2002 to include soundbars, car audio solutions, headphones, and monitor speakers that are specifically aimed at studios in terms of materials, design, and features. The company's research and development centres and the majority of its manufacturing facilities are located in France, and Focal's speakers are designed according to the philosophy of uniting functionality and unique aesthetics. To achieve this goal, Focal also works closely with renowned design agencies.

Mixing and production with greater depth

The Focal Alpha Twin Evo performs best in studio environments where extended frequency response and higher output levels are priorities – Rock, Electronic, and bass-heavy production in particular benefit from its low-end reach and ability to play loud without stress. Its 2.5-way design supports confident decision-making on complex mixes, and the combination of extended frequency response and 108dB SPL ceiling makes it a strong choice for producers stepping up from smaller two-way monitoring – capable of higher output levels than most nearfields in its price range without moving into professional reference monitor territory. The system expands further with the Focal Sub One, a subwoofer designed to complement the Evo series and extend low-end response for when the production needs it.

Great quality

After almost 2 months of having these I feel I can finally write a review of them.
These are spectacular speakers and in my opinion nothing can beat them in this price range. If you want a speaker that is well balanced and natural in sound, go on an buy these!

I upgraded from Yamaha HS7 and I feel I made the best choice. Now I can hear the low end clearly and more articulate compared to HS7. The midrange is simply amazing, on like most Focal products, and the top end doesn’t feel harsh, making them perfect for long working sessions. The stereo image is superb. For me, they also sound better than Adam A77X, a speaker that I worked with many times and has a similar 2.5 way design.

I feel that they instantly show if a mix has problems, but if you listen to a well mixed track, boy they do make it shine!

Amazing quality from Focal! Well done!

Great mid-level speakers
Faderhead 02.06.2023
I bought these as over a month ago as a second set of speakers to complement my Eve Audios SC205 + SC107 (sub) and I really like the Focals for a different perspective.

They obviously don't go nearly as low as the sub, but the midrange is more up-front, compared to the Eve Audio. For some reason they make it easier for me to get the vocals right.

I also like the frequency attenuation knobs, which allow me to dial back the high frequencies.

My only complaint is that all the buttons are on the back, which makes it impossible in my setup to reach the left one.

These are spectacular monitors. I've tested quite a few brands, including monitors that are far more expensive, but these ones really stole the show.

Game Changer

Absolutely game changer. I moved from 2 way and got really new experience in the studio. I couldn't believe it would be that good for this cost.
