Hugely Underated
Mat H., 01.10.2015
There are a lot of options for a good quality, great sounding bass and you can spend exorbitant amounts for features that make you feel like you're getting your money's worth, but the Danelectro Longhorn is proof that you don't have to spend big and in fact, you can get more "bang for you buck".

Build Quality. Just because it's relatively cheap, doesn't mean that this is a poorly made instrument. It's simple construction is very well put together and it makes this bass very light. The frets are finished very nicely and the short-scale neck is very easy to play with a superb feel. The finish on the neck and body is flawless and looks stunning and the tape binding around the body is a lovely and unique touch that gives all Dano's a nice something extra that you don't find elsewhere.

Parts. The bridge is very solid and even without adjustable saddles, the intonation is good and the rosewood saddle offers a lovely warmth to the tone. If you're think this is a "cop-out", I'd reference that no matter of cost, all great acoustics have a non-intonatable bridge saddle and nobody has ever complained about that! The aluminium nut offers some brightness and the other end of the string and most importantly means that tonally, the open string is much closer to a fretted note. Finally, the tuning machines are excellent. Kluson styled, they are very solid and hold the string very stably.

Electronics. Lipstick pickups offer superb clarity and a fully rich tone with a lot of punch and the controls are simple, a stacked volume and tone for each pickup.

Conclusion. This bass might be light but it's not a "lightweight". Studio or stage, this is serious tone to be had for very un-serious money.

Expensive MUST HAVE!
E. aus M., 31.10.2015
Over 10 years ago I had a longhorn reissue, from which I had to separate, unfortunately. But then again but then a longhorn her.Used was hardly there. Now, at last, she gives it back. So I did not really have a choice ... You love the sound or turn away shake the head. Processing and material were more tolerant in the original Danelectros.
Of course, the BottomSound is not so full and accurate in this shortscale as in a Longscale, but a good amp delivers the necessary pressure. The sound of this bass is unique in my opinion. Great basses + mids, especially with tube amp, lead to the lead guitarist Paroli to bid. Both pickups together deliver crisp twang, which is even suited for slapping (this sounds a transistoramp more brilliant). Youtube sound samples are ok but, better, listen to the very old Golden Earring albums, especially "Eight Miles High (with bass solo)" or "Seven Tears".

The new reissue is more expensive than the previous one. Improvements? The metal belt pins instead of the plastic buttons at the time would be a plus if the wood were not so soft- the screws turn quickly. The mechanisms are easier to operate and more stable than the old ones. The pickups are SOMETHING louder. That's it. The knobs are not only uglier, but also more foolishly operable than those of the predecessor. Cut and varnish are thin and in places loveless, especially visible when the plastic is "binding" removed. The fingerboard still shows full-length slight grinding traces below the E-string. The previous model was more carefully processed! If you look at the quality development especially with LowBudget instruments, one expects today at this price a cleaner processing.
But as I said: MUST HAVE! I do not give this longhorn out again!
