Ampeg V4B Bass Head

Paul5169, 23.07.2015
My Ampeg V4B Bass Head arrived today. The packaging was damaged in transit which might be expected for a heavy package. The outside box had been opened and there were holes in the second box within but as Thomann pack their stuff in the outside second box luckily nothing was damaged. The Ampeg box has the amp sitting on supports and the chassis has a suspension system also so no valves were damaged. Good packaging therefore.

I took off the grill to check the valves and was disappointed to note quite a lot of sawdust inside. I had seen questionability of quality so this was a point of quality for me. Then again, it's not a Heritage and comes from China. Still £200 cheaper than the UK with the good Euro exchange rate so can't complain.

The grill seems to hold on well although I've seen this questioned for quality. Velcro stoppers essentially.

A further question mark on utube is the loudness fan but mine is fine. I'm in a 10 ft by 10ft box room and I can't hear it at all.

It gives off quite a lot of heat so no room heating needed for the winter. After using it for an hour I noticed that the metal front and the input cable end were quite warm. To be expected.

One thing to note is the power switch. Unlike the UK, power is with the switch flicked up instead of down. This is normal for American amps apparently. It is not a quality issue.

It came with the ssnake Powercord UK C14 and I had ordered another so a point to watch. It is quite short as well if you've got 2 large cabs on top of each other so I had to swop it out for a larger cable.

The sound is awesome. very warm at 12 O'Clock with the ultra lo bass switch on but the top end is very clear also. I've been playing disco octaves with some slap and pop to Abba's Gimme Gimme... the notes on the G string are very clear with warm low end on the E. Very very clear slap and pop even with the mids at 12 o'clock so should be even better scooped.

I was advised against the amp as being too powerful for bedroom use. I've got the gain at 9 and the master at 12 and it is fine with lots of headroom.

Love it's sound. Very good value for money IMHO.

An amp for life!

WF, 31.05.2016
The Ampeg V-4B is a real fun amp, with a real "WOW" effect. With its 100 tube watt, it is really loud enough, in this regard I had a little concern, which however have been completely lost by the experiences made.

The Ampeg is operated by me on a FMC 610 and GK Neo 412 Box. The pressure that comes about is already enormous.

I am amazed how well the V-4B is processed. The amp also has no annoying fan, so is also studio and living room suitable.

The sound control is really intuitive and a suitable sound is almost immediately set. Ampeg has a great experience.

A recommendation: bass and treble 12 o'clock, middle variable - 9 o'clock for quiet hifi sound and 15 o'clock for an assertive stage sound. Additional switch - as required

The design of the amp is vintage but the sound is not necessarily. Here is the V4B for me quite modern. The sound is very open, free and dynamic, with a very large portion of pressure, which only tube tubes really create.

Already with residential building-friendly volume, flutter one already times the trouser legs. No transistor, let alone Class D - Amp creates the pressure, a tube.

The 100 watt of the V4B are very noisy, with an appropriate box the amp is almost always suffice. There are amps that have much more power than the Ampeg but can not reproduce the pressure and volume.

The V4B is at home in every genre. A bit of effort must be invested in the selection of the boxes. The best possible efficiency and loudspeaker with large diaphragm areas, then it fits.

2 * 12 and 2 * 10 boxes are too little for Amp. At least 4 * 10 are mEn necessary, but better use a 4 * 12, 6 * 10 or 8 * 10 variant.

A real advantage of the V4B is that it can withstand impedances of 2/4/8 Ohm, so it is already very practical equipped. If he still had Speakon speaker sockets, he would be perfect for me. When buying, make sure that the corresponding cable jack is also purchased with Speakon.

Supplement:
Extension of my evaluation after a few months of use.

I still have a Bugera BVV and a Markbass CL 300 tube amp available. The Ampeg V-4B I like the three of the sound best. It has also the use of a 610 box than for me optimally put out. The Ampeg is really loud on such a box. So a combination is not to compare with a 100 watt combo. There is a range of 500 watt transistor amps that the ampeg will fade loose!
I really like the versatility of the V-4B. It is great as a "living room amp" - since it sounds very clean and is nevertheless pressureful in the bass. On the stage the amp becomes a "wild boar"! - dirt, pressure, and sound, make the Ampeg what it really is, a classic!

I can only give everyone the advice to buy this Funamp, which is a purchase for life!
