Biopics are booming. And rightly so, because the mix of entertainment, fascinating facts about the musicians, their era and their surroundings, and of course their music, makes for a brilliant combination for anyone with a love of music. Have you seen these ten films?
Right now, the biopic “Michael” about the life of Michael Jackson, starring his nephew Jaafar Jackson in the lead role, is breaking one record after another. We’re taking this as an opportunity to look at ten more films about the lives of legendary musicians.
Elvis
Austin Butler’s portrayal of Elvis Presley was rightly awarded a Golden Globe, but Tom Hanks in the role of his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, is also absolutely worth watching. The film tells the story of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll icon of all time in wonderful imagery. And even if you’re not an Elvis fan and don’t want to become one, this biopic is worth watching for the amazing cars alone! 😉
Love & Mercy (2014)
Love & Mercy explores the genius of Beach Boys mastermind Brian Wilson, while also sensitively touching on his mental health issues. And by the time the film reaches the recording sessions for ‘Pet Sounds’, you’re sure to feel the urge to listen to this timeless masterpiece again. The soundtrack is also highly recommended, as it features re-recorded and re-arranged BB classics, some featuring Brian Wilson’s voice.
Control (2007)
The 2007 film “Control”, aptly shot entirely in black and white, is a visually stunning epic that delivers an almost dystopian depiction of England. Delving deeply into his personal struggles, this biopic about the short life of Ian Curtis really gets under your skin, whilst also impressively showcasing how Joy Division’s seminal albums came to be.
8 Mile (2002)
Strictly speaking, “8 Mile” isn’t a proper biopic, as it’s a semi-biographical film about “B-Rabbit”, played by Eminem. The film is nonetheless well worth watching, not least because it features many authentic locations in Detroit. And, of course, it boasts some top-quality tracks, featuring 50 Cent, Jay-Z, Nas, and Xzibit, among others.
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
Raking in $900 million at the box office, “Bohemian Rhapsody” is the most successful biopic to date. Rami Malek even won an Oscar for his role as Freddie Mercury, which is not surprising given his stunning performance. The film tells the story of the mega band Queen from their formation right up to one of the band’s most unforgettable performances at “Live Aid” in Wembley Stadium.
I’m Not There (2007)
Without Bob Dylan, the music world would certainly be different; his genre-defying influence cannot be overstated. A chronological list of the key milestones in his life would certainly fill an entire evening, but might also be rather tedious. Fortunately, “I’m Not There” takes a refreshing approach: six different actors play Dylan, including Heath Ledger, Richard Gere, and even Cate Blanchett (!).
What’s Love Got to Do with It (1993)
Tina Turner’s life was far from easy before she launched her solo career, not least because of her tyrannical husband and musical partner, Ike Turner. The biopic What’s Love Got to Do with It traces Tina’s rise to global stardom. A must-see for every fan and, of course, packed with great music!
Bob Marley: One Love (2024)
“One Love” is about Bob Marley and reggae culture. The biopic was co-produced by Rita and Ziggy Marley, which is why the period from the 1976 assassination attempt up to Bob Marley’s cancer diagnosis is portrayed with particular authenticity. Filmed partly on location, the biopic features many original Marley songs. If you’re a reggae fan, you’ve probably already seen it; if not, watch it anyway!
The Doors (1991)
Val Kilmer had already played a few leading and supporting roles before “The Doors”, but the role of Jim Morrison was the big breakthrough for the actor, who learned the Doors’ songs by heart and sang them himself. As a vivid depiction of the rise of the psychedelic rock band and their downfall (specifically that of Jim Morrison), “The Doors” is considered one of the most important biopics in cinema history.
Rocketman (2019)
“The man with the glasses”: Elton John is not only instantly recognisable by his appearance, but also by his voice, his piano playing, and his songs. “Rocketman” traces the path of this exceptional talent from childhood onwards and doesn’t shy away from his later struggles with alcohol and drug addiction. Directed by Dexter Fletcher – the same director as “Bohemian Rhapsody” – the film was a great success, as evidenced by overwhelmingly positive reviews, numerous awards, and nominations.
