A Question of Perspective, Criteria, and Goals
Determining the level of challenge ultimately depends on perspective, criteria, song choice, and goals. With some instruments like the piano, harmonica, or drums, it’s relatively simple to play your first notes. Yet, as one ventures into advanced playing techniques, the complexity increases, with the musical journey offering endless horizons, and fun challenges!
Learning and mastering: there’s a difference.
Some instruments take longer to produce good sounds, or any sound at all. Others require you to develop physical skills first. But that’s what makes music fascinating. There’s a big difference between learning and mastering an instrument. Let’s explore some instruments that offer a rewarding challenge when learned (or mastered).
1. Oboe – The double reed experience
The oboe produces beautiful sounds when mastered. However, this instrument hides a lot under the hood: in order to play the first notes on this woodwind instrument, you’ll have to understand the concept of its double reed: two wooden blades vibrating against each other. Like blowing a balloon, the oboe requires plenty of air, pressure, and proper breathing technique, making each practice session a step toward beautiful music. Ready to train your abs? 😉
2. French Horn – Epicness, simply put
The French horn is a captivating wind instrument. It has a long tube with a narrow bore, making tone control a refined skill to master. Even experienced horn players find achieving the correct intonation challenging – and that’s what makes this instrument so rewarding to tackle! Further techniques like hand-stopping add to the complexity of this ancient beauty – however, in the end it’s all worth it, as the French horn is the instrument capable of evoking a sheer amount of emotions in the listener, delivering powerful performances that can be described as ‘epic’.
3. Violin
The violin is a popular classical instrument, challenging but not impossible to play. Many say that a good violinist is able to make their instrument sing or speak, and that’s where the tricky part is. Despite the relatively challenging entry point, it’s a very popular instrument among children – when approached at an early age, the violin can be mastered with no problems. Disclaimer: beginners may take one to two years to progress from scratchy, off-key sounds to the desired beautiful tones this instrument is capable of. Don’t lose hope: this is just the beginning of a lifelong musical adventure.
4. Harp
The harp is one of the most enchanting and challenging instruments to learn. It is physically large and has numerous strings that are plucked with both hands. There can be up to seven pedals, depending on the type of harp, which will change the pitch of the strings during the performance. This requires high coordination of hands and feet in order to generate those enchanting and mythological sounds!
5. Organ – for musical acrobats
Playing the organ invites you to coordinate hand, finger, and foot movements simultaneously – think about piano or drums, in that sense. This skill must be extensively trained on the organ, pipe organ, or church organ. While the hands manage the manuals, stops, and sounds, the feet operate the pedalboard in the bass, weaving together epic tones. It’s challenging, but mastering it is very rewarding.
6. Drums
Independent limb coordination is the essential skill to develop in drumming. Arms and legs work autonomously, and the left and right brain hemispheres must operate separately. Drummers are usually encouraged to stop “thinking” (no pun intended) during the song and let muscle memory take over. The first simple four-beat pattern can be easily learned, but mastering intricate techniques to really groove away requires many practice sessions, making the journey exciting and engaging.
7. Bagpipes
The bagpipes offer a classic physical challenge. Whether it’s the Great Highland Bagpipe, Smallpipe, Borderpipe, or Hümmelchen, the airflow required to play is enormous. While you continuously blow into the instrument, you also pump air out with your arm. Nonetheless, anyone with enough perseverance, diligence, and patience can learn to play the bagpipes, making it a uniquely fulfilling experience, despite the physical effort required at the beginning.
8. Sitar – exploring Indian culture
The buzzing, overtone-rich sound of the sitar has a unique charm. The challenge of this instrument lies not only in its melody, drone, and sympathetic strings, but also in its unusual playing technique. 9. Guitar – the sky is the limit
The guitar is often mentioned as an “easy-to-learn” instrument. Indeed, its first notes, chords, and song accompaniments can be quick to play, even if the fingertips might hurt at first. However, the journey to those finger-shredding solos in heavy metal, as well as those fancy blues licks, fingerstyle dexterity, and memorable licks can be quite long. Learning never ends with the guitar; it is a truly limitless instrument, offering endless potential and excitement.
10. The Human Voice
The voice is also an instrument. Casual singing like at a party or in a football stadium is an easy job for everyone (well, besides pitchy singers…). However, this has little to do with real singing. Except for natural-born talents, the singing voice must be trained and developed over years to prevent physical damage from improper technique, to earn the audience’s awe, and to be able to convey all the emotions needed in the song. This journey of vocal development is both challenging and deeply fulfilling. 😉
