Love at first sight

Zultan's Q Series is a range of medium-weight, hand-hammered Turkish cymbals made of B20 bronze, which are striking because of their unusual appearance. The different surface treatments are not only pleasing to the eye, but also have an effect on the sound. The result is a sound that can be used in many different styles, cuts through well, and at the same time has a dark, warm sonic range. The affordable Q Series is aimed at ambitious beginners and more advanced drummers, and comprises individual hi-hats, crashes, splashes, and rides, as well as pre-configured complete sets.

Zultan 21" Q Ride cymbal

Opposites attract attention

While the completely lathed and high-gloss polished underside of the Q cymbals is similar to the popular Zultan Rock Beat series, the upper side is absolutely unique. The rim, which is covered with deep hammer indentations, is unlathed, as is the bell – this raw, earthy look creates a strong contrast to the high-gloss centre. The manual craftsmanship of Zultan's experienced Turkish cymbal smiths makes each cymbal really unique. The 21" ride has a powerful, dynamic, full sound with a slightly dark character and medium sustain.

One letter – many uses

The Zultan Q cymbals are in the medium weight category and are ideal for genres such as Pop, Funk, and Blues thanks to their warm and balanced sound and their slightly reduced treble range. Their sound always blends homogeneously into their musical surroundings, leaving plenty of room for the other instruments. With its full-bodied, carrying sound, which always remains controlled even when playing more powerfully, the 21" ride provides a dark soundscape combined with a clearly defined stick sound and a dry and distinctive bell. When playing with larger sticks, drummers can also coax out monumental crash sounds from this cymbal.

About Zultan

To provide traditional craftsmanship at a fair price has been the guiding principle of Zultan ever since it was founded in 2000. The firm’s practice of selling directly to the end customer makes it possible to offer very customer-friendly prices. Nevertheless, the production process for Zultan's trademark cymbals, which are made mainly in Turkey, is of the highest quality, a fact which has ensured they have also been a fixture in the Thomann range since 2011. The nearly 250 Zultan products cover several cymbal series, catering for all sectors of the music market. Zultan also offers accessories such as bags and drumsticks. Thanks to the use of high-quality materials and manufacturing expertise, Zultan really does offer uncompromising quality at a reasonable price.

handmade cymbal Zultan 21" Q Ride

The Q Series does it all

The Zultan 21" Q Ride is an excellent choice wherever a clear but not overly bright ride sound is desired, be it a Blues session, Funk gig, or Pop concert. Whether it's played loud or soft, it consistently produces a pleasant, approachable sound that stays controlled, without ever being too prominent. Another possible use is in the mixed genres of acoustic and electronic music that are so popular these days, in which darker-sounding cymbals are preferred, as their profile suits the overall atmosphere better. Last but not least, all Q cymbals will also do an excellent job in the studio, as their sonic properties make them extremely microphone-friendly.

J
Not quite my sound and It's a bit heavy.
Jerm 19.05.2019
It had the specs (I thought) to be a great ride, the dryness mixed with the brilliant polish, B20 Alloy Hand Hammered/Crafted, The bell size made me think it could potentially be crashable. I was wrong, I instantly noticed it was a bit heavy, and not very crashable (at least to my ears).
The Ride doesn't sound BAD, the Bow of the cymbal is articulate (especially in the polished area) and I would've liked a bigger better bell for this type of ride in the case of an articulate bow. On Zultan's website, it does state it's between the "Rock Beat" and "F5" in volume, but with how heavy it is, I'm now curious how heavy is the "Rock Beat?" and how heavy is the "F5?" Zultan doesn't specify that with (Thin, Medium, Heavy) So now I'm unsure on what product to look into now from them.

R
Great sound and great aesthetics
RyanB92 27.10.2022
NOTE: Review edited to add more details after more time with the cymbal. Since this is a ride cymbal, I feel it's important to mention that I play with nylon tipped sticks the overwhelming majority of the time.

I was happy when I unboxed it due to its look alone but I was even more happy when I played it! I find this pool to be quite unique in sound because of the large unlathed areas and what I feel is quite a strange bell.

The body is quite differentiated, the lathed portion produces a deep, clear ting with plenty of wash and some brighter shimmer, but not a large amount. The unlathed rim has a less clear ting and a darker, mellower and slightly earthier wash to it which I think is useful sometimes for quieter passages of music. It is quite loud when crashed on, but it's also quite deep and somewhat dry, and I have found that, at rehearsal, a wall of guitar noise can overpower it somewhat.

The bell is unlathed too, also large and hard to miss, but looks oddly flat to my eye. But it does sound nice! A relatively soft "ping" when hit with the stick tip, and a deep, dark, more powerful "dunnng" when hit with the shoulder.

I've found this dish particularly useful in my 1st band for soft & hard rock, psych, funk and even some more poppy contexts. Playing to myself, it also takes jazz and swing patterns
quite nicely. After some recording with my 2nd band (hardcore/thrash metal), I think it's less suitable for more heavy genres, where it was a little too dark and dry to cut into the guitars nicely.

All in all, a great looking cymbal with a somewhat complex and interesting sound spectrum. Brilliant price/performance ratio as usual with Zultan so definitely worth the money and worth a try for anything from soft to loudish music. Might not be the best option for heavier styles though.

Dissonanzen sind absolutes no go.
