The pocket-sized studio

The Shure MV88‑USBC is a clip‑on stereo microphone – and because it's USB‑C compatible, it instantly turns any Android or Apple device into a mobile recording studio. The MV88 can rotate and swivel, and it uses what's known as an M/S microphone configuration: One capsule points forwards, while a second capsule captures the left and right information (M/S stands for mid/side). An M/S microphone lets the user "zoom in" on the sound source, much like adjusting a camera lens, meaning recordings end up with less background noise. Shure has ensured that the firmware works seamlessly with all standard mobile operating systems, so setup involves nothing more than installing the Shure MOTIV Audio (or MOTIV Video) app, which controls the MV88, then plugging in the mic itself.

Plugging the Shure MV88-USBC into a smartphone

Say goodbye to bad sound!

While the quality of smartphone cameras continues to improve with every generation, the microphones are usually neglected – the result is dazzling images paired with muffled sound. The Shure MV88‑USBC clip‑on microphone fixes that, and its audio quality genuinely holds up even against budget studio mics. Users also have an impressive level of freedom, setting their recording parameters using the dedicated app right on their mobile device. For anyone new to recording, five preset modes (Speech, Singing, Flat, Acoustic, and Loud) offer a straightforward starting point. Equally, creatives who know what they're doing can fine‑tune the gain, stereo width, EQ, compression, and limiting themselves. Apart from the Shure MOTIV Video or Audio app, no extra software is required – recordings can even be edited directly in the app.

The mic for every day

The Shure MV88‑USBC is so small, light, and tough – and sounds so good – that there's really no reason for content creators not to carry it with them at all times: With the mini-case it ships with, it'll be safe in any pocket or bag. And its range of uses is so broad that it almost deserves its own category: the "everyday mic". The MV88 allows absolutely anyone to make the leap from photographer to audiographer, because it makes capturing high‑quality audio just as easy as taking good photos. Influencers, streamers, songwriters, musicians, journalists, sound designers – the list of people who'll find a use for the MV88 is almost endless. Thanks to Shure's powerful real‑time denoiser, everyday interference is a thing of the past, and yet the controls are straightforward enough even for absolute beginners.

About Shure

The American company Shure began developing microphones during the early 1930s and is one of the pioneers of the audio engineering sector. Models such as the 55 Unidyne – known to many as the "Elvis microphone" – and the SM57 and SM58 which appeared in the mid-1960s are still ubiquitous in live sound production today. They enjoy cult status among musicians and technicians alike. In the 1990s, Shure introduced the first wireless microphones and in-ear monitoring systems and became a market leader in this field. In addition to microphones, Shure offers a wide range of earphones and headphones for studio and live use, as well as various accessories.

A day in the life of the MV88

It's springtime and the birds are singing in the trees: Quick, get the Shure MV88 out of its case and plug it in – that'll be a nice bit of natural ambience for the next theatre production: preset "Flat". Next on the agenda is a telephone interview: In the past, that would have meant using a dedicated large‑diaphragm microphone, but now it's enough to simply place the smartphone itself on the table and set the mic to "Speech". In the afternoon, it's off to band practice: In "Loud" mode, the MV88 won't have any trouble, even with the drumkit, and the songs can be sent straight to the rest of the band. In the evening, a new acoustic duo needs a recording of their first gig: Use "Singing" mode, and there's still plenty of options to edit the songs in the app later. One day's work with the Shure MV88‑USBC – and it's hard to remember how things ever worked without it.

Vorsicht bei iOS: Massive Software-Probleme für Musiker (Workarounds inkl.)
MichiGo 04.02.2026
