One of Sennheiser's best

The Sennheiser MD 441-U is a tried-and-trusted, supercardioid dynamic microphone with acoustic properties that come as close as possible to those of a condenser microphone. Transient response, low-distortion transmission, and a balanced yet bold sound are characteristic features of the Sennheiser MD 441-U, which make this the microphone of choice for practically any application. In addition, the Sennheiser MD 441-U is highly resistant to feedback and insensitive to structure-borne sound thanks to a spring-loaded system, and also features a five-position bass roll-off switch and single-position brilliance (treble boost) switch. The microphone is also encased in an all-metal housing, complete with grip surface in a black leatherette finish.

A whole palette of bass and treble options

The five-position bass roll-off switch has two end positions marked "M" (for "Music") and "S" (for "Speech"), and essentially has the sole purpose of thinning out the bass range with increasing proximity to the "S" position. The single-position brilliance switch, on the other hand, raises the corresponding range by a good two decibels to provide greater transparency where required. Combining the sound options provided by both filter circuits with the microphone's supercardioid polar pattern (significant change in sound produced by slightly different positioning) opens up numerous sound design possibilities, which will bring joy to every recording enthusiast’s heart.

The perfect addition to every microphone pool

There are some microphones that are predestined for use in certain areas and others – including the dynamic Sennheiser MD 441-U – which can hold their own in almost any area of use. Quite simply, the Sennheiser MD 441-U is a true "all-rounder", with the ability to transmit signals in the manner of a condenser microphone, but with the added benefits of a dynamic microphone, and therefore delivering a price/performance ratio that is more than fair despite the relatively high price tag. This makes the Sennheiser MD 441-U the ideal choice for performers who are willing to pay that little bit more in exchange for a top-notch microphone.

About Sennheiser

In June 1945, Prof. Fritz Sennheiser founded the Wennebostel Laboratory, which initially produced measuring equipment. Commissioned by Siemens in 1945, the young company developed the MD-1 microphone, which was launched in 1946. After the development of further microphones, the company was renamed Sennheiser Electronic in 1958. Two years later, Sennheiser introduced the MD 421 dynamic microphone, which is still in production today and still held in high esteem by many sound engineers. Further groundbreaking developments, such as the HD 414 headphones and the MD 441 microphone classic, hugely enhanced the company’s international reputation, eventually making Sennheiser one of the leading manufacturers of microphone and headphone systems in the world.

Highly versatile

The headline says it all – after all, the Sennheiser MD 441-U excels in so many areas – but to recapitulate, this high-quality, dynamic microphone is the perfect choice for speech, vocals, and instrumental recordings across the entire sound transmission spectrum. Whether used in live or studio performances, with percussion or wind instruments, for speech or vocals, the Sennheiser MD 441-U is a perfect fit with every signal source, not least on account of its filters, and can also cope admirably with the stresses and strains of life in the live music business thanks to its robust and highly durable construction.

Great mike just push the gain
ianos 11.11.2019
Purchased for vocals and snare miking, I have found it much more useful for snare miking.

Over or under-snare works great and having the switch to alter the settings from 'Speech' to 'Music' with several grades in between, as well as hi boost switch allows plenty of tweaking possibilities.

In terms of vocals it looks great, bringing images of Bowie and Stevie Nicks (and now Hozier is using one live too), however it has been tricky for live performance in my experience. It needs a lot of gain on the mixer, and has always felt a little dull/ less responsive than a trusty SM58 or even a Sennheiser MD421. If someone is looking for something interesting for concert vocals I would rather reccomend that, it's cheaper and a bit more friendly to the performer (in my opinion).

I wouldn't sell it but it is not as versatile as I originally expected. Great to have when variation in a drum miking is needed.

We all know The Beatles use MD421, that makes it famous, and MD441 is the turbo version of MD421, it looks like an artwork, silver outward with leather handed, and it gives you awesome record quality, this is the best dynamic mic!!!!

One of the world's great mics
BernieW 08.09.2022
This dynamic mic has many similarities with a condenser. It combines extended HF response with smoothness. Tight hypercardioid pattern control offers excellent isolation of the source and rejection of outside spill. This is one of the best sounding mics on brass, wind or string instruments. Extremely versatile, for example excellent as a snare bottom mic and the best lectern mic ever. Suits many more roles like soft vocals, piano sounding board and more. This is a mic to bring along as a problem solver. The 5-position HPF and HF boost controls are useful to tailor its response, though I mostly prefer to achieve those results with a console or DAW. This is a classic
