My best dynamic microphone

Dantschge, 08.11.2013
It is hard to find in the hand and it also takes some conviction against the microstander that it remains in place with this weight because the weight, when fixed in an unfavorable position, is capable of turning up almost every thread. The processing seems to be perfectly fine in spite of Chinese origin, which also other brand manufacturers thanks to modern quality control now quite well (see eg AKG Perception).

I was able to compare it with my other microphones on the basis of recordings of my double bass (because I am very familiar with its sound) and I am very enthusiastic, as in comparison to good condenser large diaphragm (AKG C214, AKG C3000, AKG Perception 820 tube) and also small membranes (AKG C451B, DPA 4099 B).

While the tested small membranes suffer somewhat from their proximity effect and so the low basses slightly over-stressed and thus become wummier and sound undifferentiated (which sounds like the EV RE320 in the bassdrum setting comes close and its use as kickdrum microphone presumably meets) the EV sounds RE320 (flat) over the entire range of the double bass, which I would like to attribute to the variable-D design principle of the RE320. The wonderfully woody sound of the double bass in the deep middle is reproduced by the RE320 quite naturally (with setting "flat" on the RE320) and sounds thus more concise and more powerful than all my condensation microphones. The large diaphragm condenser microphones capture a few more and finer arc sounds while brushing and sound a bit more finely resolved, but the RE320 works out the typical woody double bass in the middle more clearly. The differences are perhaps also a taste, but new brooms just simply go well and bring new aspects into consciousness.

The EV RE320 has also bravely struck me when I sing (lower voice), even if I still prefer my AKG Perception 820 tube with its very soft overall sound (although this is rather a taste rather than a quality question). Especially as a speaker microphone, I can imagine the EV RE320 very well, because it is somewhat more concise formulated than my large diaphragm condensation microphones. Unfortunately, the EV RE320 can not be used without Poppschutz (at least with today's song "Poppa Joe" and a distance of approx. 10 cm from the mouth to the microphone). I was not so happy with the bongo recordings. They were a bit musty and not as funny as I had hoped so, so I would rather have used the AKG C451B small diaphragm. Then we took another cajon with the EV RE320 from the rear (at the soundhole). This has cleared cleanly and a massive bass beat done (clear transients and impulses). When picking up an electric guitar, we also got very good, full sounding signals.

For occasional studio inserts, I can even use the EV RE320 in my AKG H 85 spider, even if the micro due to the high weight with horizontal mounting hangs somewhat down, which must be compensated with the cantilever arm of the micro stand. The AKG H85 is significantly smaller and cheaper than the original EV spider. Besides, I have already several at home.

The output level of the EV RE320 is of course not exactly high, if you play it with a rather quiet double bass. With my SPL GoldMike MKII I had to turn the gain on well over 60 dB, in order to get the level of the microphone to full control. In the case of poorer preamps, the "intoxicating" effect on the signal could have. I was however on my test recordings of no disturbing noise or other noise bothered (also with the high gain setting of over 60 dB).

After the tested studio applications I will use the micro now also live, where it is synonymous to other qualities (eg feedback, insensitivity, the freedom of movement of the musician, etc.), than only to 100% correct reproduction of the signal (especially if one is better Suitable alternatives in the studio). The live use in front of an accordion was at least very convincing, both from sound and handling (much freedom of movement of the musician without noticeable sound changes, no feedback even at 60 dB gain).

From the price / performance ratio the EV RE320 is in any case very fine, if it is synonymous perhaps not a universal solution for all occasions. But which micro (in addition to this price class) can assert that of itself.

Absolutely convincing at the amp acceptance

matt60, 20.07.2012
After over the last years the Audio Technica AE3000 my constant faithful companion in the acceptance of my guitaramps live and recording was, I just wanted to try once again an attempt to top this micro. The problem with the acceptance was so far mostly the punch in the depths, the (close-up effect?) Simply not quite convinced. By chance, I came across an article on EV's "variable-D" principle, and then it was spontaneous, the idea: I test the times times, finally I had the RE20 yes often seen before amps.

On the EV website, I eventually came across advertising for RE320 with Joe Bonamassa, who obviously is on the road with his new RE320 in front of his amps ....... Well, I thought, of guitar sound, he definitely understands something completely independent of whether One likes his music. So: Micro ordered, before the amp with it and ............. Bingo !!! Absolutely fantastic, powerful and very natural ampsound. Officially bony-dry wumms in the depths (straight with closed boxes!), Enough bite in the heights with complex centers. Maybe slightly less tame than the AE3000, one might say. Basically like an "SM57 done right", I read somewhere about the RE320, and it comes very well.

Conclusion: The AE3000 probably now (at least at least) in the lined bag ........

PS: The sound was by the way during the first days subjectively a little bit. However, I thought that maybe the mechanical system "must go" (perhaps Negro magnet), and actually disappeared after some time (1-2 weeks) with some Live volume the whole thing quite clearly. After 6 months this has now completely completed, and this supports my "enema hypothesis". This should be noted at the test and not immediately after an hour test time, if there is something too much of the presence should be! ;-)
