First-class sound is close at hand

The ultra-compact Behringer XENYX 802S mixer has eight inputs that make first-class sound almost effortless. Thanks to its award-winning XENYX microphone preamps, the mixer generates a very clear, warm sound, making it ideally suited to streaming. Despite – or perhaps because of – its compact dimensions (it measures just 198x220x47mm, and weighs only 1600g), the device feels extremely robust: One thing that immediately stands out compared its more expensive competitors is the fact that the rotary controls don't seem loose in the slightest, performing their tasks with a very pleasing tactile feedback. Users can immediately tell that Behringer has spent years (decades, in fact) honing its philosophy of perfectly functioning technology at affordable prices - their current product lines are proof that they definitely know what they are doing, with no sense that they are in awe of brands from the high-end sector.

Get connected

The Behringer XENYX 802S can be connected to any computer or mobile device via USB, making it unbelievably easy to integrate digital sources and analogue devices. Up to eight signals can be mixed simultaneously via the one mono and two stereo channels and combined using the stereo RCA streaming input and the stereo USB input. In total, up to 12 crystal-clear audio signals can then be transmitted to headphones or the TRS main outputs. This great variety of sources allows creative musicians, for instance, to patch in several keyboards and synths at once, without having to constantly hook up one device and unplug another. Instead of feeling like a budget option, the 802S is such a top-quality mixer – especially in terms of distortion, where it is immaculate – that it could easily go on to serve as a blueprint for other, more established devices. In short, it does everything it's supposed to at an extremely reasonable price.

Controls, Behringer Xenyx 802S

Versatility is very on-brand

The Behringer XENYX 802S has been designed as a versatile helper for a whole host of different users and use cases. It's obviously suitable for streamers and podcasters, but it will also function brilliantly as a compact sub-mixer for keyboard players, guitarists, or drummers. It'll also prove a great addition to an audio setup whenever network-compatible devices need to be combined with analogue signals; in particular, the immensely solid microphone input is a big plus when recording or performing live, as are its extremely convenient fingertip controls. The ultra-compact 802S is aimed squarely at music professionals and semi-pros, but also at ambitious streamers, podcasters, and home studio producers, all of whom are understandably keen on having hum-free signal paths. The USB interface makes it a practical solution on the go, too.

Connections, Behringer Xenyx 802S analogue mixer

About Behringer

The company, which was founded in Germany by Uli Behringer and now manufactures its products in China, has been known for affordable and great-value equipment since its very first product, the Studio Exciter F. An array of mixing consoles (such as the Eurodesk MX8000), signal processors, and later sound amplification and monitoring equipment, has made it possible for countless musicians to fit out their home studios, practice rooms, and mobile PAs within budget limits that were previously unthinkable. The acquisition of other companies, including Midas, Klark Teknik, and TC Electronic, meant that new product groups were added - and also resulted in the technical expertise of these companies being incorporated into product development.

Space-saving sub-mixer

Streamers, podcasters, and the like are mostly interested in space-saving equipment that just does its job and doesn't need a lot of extra attention. Musicians such as keyboard players or drummers, on the other hand, are used to having to combine their signal sources with a sub-mixer, so as not to occupy too many channels on the main console or stage box: At the same time, our channel-hungry friends usually have an understandable interest in having some control over their mix and overall output themselves, even if it's just for monitoring purposes. The Behringer XENYX 802S is the pragmatic answer to all these questions and more, but without costing the Earth. Reliable, high-quality sound in a package not much larger – or even that much more expensive – than a takeaway. How about that?

Ik gebruik dit mengpaneel in combinatie met mijn Bose column speaker. Het geeft me op deze manier een betere controle over het geluid. Super handig in gebruik en bovendien een echt lichtgewicht. Echt heerlijk!

Fantastic for the price with some small nags

I initially avoided this because Behringer yada yada but it's a great little device for having fun with music with my kids. The microphone preamps are really impressive even with mics like the SM57 and the sound comes through pretty clear. I have two reasonable complaints and one unreasonable/wishlist item.

Reasonable complaints:
- the device is ungrounded with a switch mode power supply and very noisy as a result. Even with just a microphone and a pair of headphones you can already hear mains hum. Connecting an electric guitar (via DI Box or directly) is catastrophic. Giving the board and source of grounding (like touching a metal connector or plugging the USB cable into your PC with a mains ground connection) massively improves the situation. But why couldn't they have spent an extra half euro or something for a grounded power supply option?
- some reviews mention a lack of rubber feet but mine actually came with a set which seem to have been thrown in the box as an afterthought. They have a hollowed out spot in the centre and are clearly designed to fit over the four screws on the bottom, which is thoughtful. The adhesive is terrible, though, and they fall off constantly. Without the feet the bottom of the device is uneven and wobbles from corner to corner. I think I'll try superglue.

And the unreasonable complaint: after you figure out the functionality of the "stream" buttons and their interaction with channel 7/8 you have a lot of really great possibilities for how to treat USB audio, but there's one thing that's not possible: you cannot hear both the USB audio and the main mix on the monitor channel without introducing the USB audio into the main mix itself. You either choose to hear the main mix (with or without USB) or *only* the USB "stream", without the main mix. That's annoying for a couple of reasons and eliminates one very obvious way of using the board, but fixing it would involve adding a second independent mixer just for the monitor channel, which would add some amount of cost, particularly when you could effectively use your computer as that mixer by having it reflect the input sound back at the output. So ya: very minor/unreasonable nag.

Otherwise a great product!

Great little mixer. I was amazed by the clear, defined sound. Headphone output is more than sufficient. Looks sturdy and it’s well finished. For the price, it’s unbeatable.

Bought this to plug my synths, drum machine, MPC into when practising or recording at home. I have since used it at full band practice will vocals, guitar and bass (both through Helix) and its perfect instead of dragging the gigging monster desk around.
