OK. Not worth the £229+ pounds I paid
The Hutch 30.07.2019
This is OK but very over priced for the quality. My PunchCoal just arrived! But I feel aquite disappointed on opening the box and first looks :-(
TBH. Not had a box guitar like this before so maybe it's my inexperience but I am a long serving rock/blues guitarist and have basses, a ukulele and a banjo... I thought this little resonator would add to my arsenal for recoding at home. So I was looking forward to using it with fingering style and slide.
Only had it day and out of the box it felt immediately lesser quality than I expected for this price point even though I like the sound. The padded bag was a great addition but the strings felt cheap, ( ichanged immediately) and the finish is lack lustre. The neck is sturdy but the fretboard looks cheap and colour sprayed rather than stained.
Some of the fret edges are not smooth.
But the worst part is the convex back bow it came with, no relief and 3mm action at the 12 fret which is way too high for me (it might be ok for slide). So it's intonation is way out from the 4th fret and near impossible to fret past the 7th fret. The neck seems too wide for 4 strings making the string gaps wider than a normal guitar.
The P90 pickup is low volume. I wouldn't think it was one of quality but it works but needs a lot of gain. The volume and tone are adequate. Not sure why it only has one strap stud. The machine heads again are adequate but could do better.
So already I've adjusted the truss rod but not much improvement in action or intonation. The first fret height seems good so I'll have to lower the bridge. I could file down the tacky bridge (it's cheap wood) because I need to lower the action for the way I want to play it.
Overall, at the moment I am regretting my purchase. It was a birthday present but I wished I'd just bought a parlour guitar. This is not a quality made instrument in my view. For 229£ I would expect something much better. I may send it back!
