Thomann Portuguese Mandolin 1A-P

As a guitarist who occasionally wanted to play with mandolin, I didn't want to buy some kind of high-end mandolin, but something that will be Ok to play, has OK built quality and not too expensive. I ordered this instrument and must confess that it absolutely fulfiled my expectations. I 'd also like to say that one of the things that I really like about it is the dark wood color which differs this instrument from most of the others that are light wood color (of course that is absolutely subjective thing, but I wanted to say it). Also one great thing is that it has built in electronics, which is great for instrument at this price level. I'm satisfied with it, and of course all recomendations to Thomann.

Impossible to correct the intonation because of the bridge/saddle construction. The lowest string was 5mm off the fretboard at the 12th fret and the first string was 3mm off.

This instrument should never have been offered for sale. It is not even minimally functional, and cannot be made so without major restoration and cost. I am disappointed that Thomann would allow this poor quality of instrument to be sold in their store, let alone allow their name to be used on it (made by Hora).

There's no excuse for offering such an unplayable, poorly built instrument.

Ich war bei Thomann vor Ort und nachdem ich kurz die günstigen Harley-Benton Modelle in der Hand hatte, war mir klar dass ich mir dieses Instrument hier kaufe. Die Verarbeitung ist super und das Holz fühlt sich wirklich wie Holz an, was bei den ganzen Hochglanz-Lack Mandolinen nicht der Fall war.

Insgesamt spielt sich die Mandoline fast wie eine Geige. Das liegt einerseits an der Stimmung (die wie bei Mandolinen üblich genau wie bei einer Geige ist) und anderseits an den sehr kurzen Abständen der Bünde. Selbst in der ersten Lage muss ich die Finger nur minimal mehr strecken. Das hat zur Folge, dass man quasi sofort die ganzen Stücke spielen kann, die man auch auf der Geige spielen kann.

Das Instrument ist "out of the box" in einem absolut spielfertigen Zustand. Einmal kurz gestimmt und schon kann es losgehen. Das Griffbrett und Saitenlage machen auch bei längerem Spiel keinerlei Probleme. Auch die Saiten werde ich jetzt erstmal nicht austauschen, weil die meiner Meinung nach vollkommen in Ordnung sind.

Der Klang: Die Mandoline hat einen sehr schönen klaren, fast schon silbrigen Klang, der mich fast ein bisschen an meine Western-Gitarre erinnert. Ich war überrascht wie lange das Instrument nach Anschlag der Saiten "nachschwingt". Sowohl Akkorde als auch Melodie klingen sehr schön.

Ein paar abschließende Gedanken: Den Tonabnehmer habe ich noch nicht getestet deswegen kann ich dazu nichts sagen. Ein paar der Kritiken hier waren durchaus auch negativ. Ich bin aber mir dem Instrument wirklich zufrieden. Ich hatte es jetzt schon einige Stunden in der Hand und freue mich immernoch jedes mal über das Spielgefühl und den Klang.
