The King of Cabs, but no royal price tag

For some, they're simply loud wooden boxes. For others, they’re the crowning glory of the electric guitar: 4x12" cabinets like the Harley Benton G412A, fitted with four 12" speakers. It's a format just about every guitarist will recognise – after all, since the 1960s, this has been the definitive cabinet design when it comes to high‑output Rock and Heavy Metal sounds. The legendary sight of stage setups stacked high with walls of 4x12s has earned them the nickname "King of Cabs". Staying true to that tradition, the four drivers in the Harley Benton G412A are housed in a closed-back enclosure made from high-quality poplar plywood and finished in classic black tolex. A black grille cloth and white piping complete the instantly recognisable look. And, true to Harley Benton form, the G412A comes in at a very approachable price.

Mono or stereo

With dimensions of 74 × 35 × 74cm, the G412A's enclosure gives the drivers plenty of room to move. The two upper speakers are mounted at a slight angle, which improves onstage monitoring and makes it easier to locate the guitar clearly within the overall sound. As is typical for a 4x12, the large combined cone area of the four speakers, along with the closed-back construction, produces a very punchy sound with pronounced mids and a solid low end. Total power handling is a substantial 280W, with a maximum sound pressure level (SPL) of 129dB. In mono operation, the cabinet can be run at either 16 or 4 ohms. In stereo mode, it's split into two separate sections, providing two independent channels rated at 140W each into 8 ohms. As always, when using a valve amp, it's important to ensure these impedance values are matched correctly.

A piece of Rock history

The size and format of the Harley Benton G412A make it a natural partner for powerful British-style tube heads, which by design pair perfectly with a cab like this – the combination became known as the classic half stack, and helped define the sound of Rock. That said, the G412A works just as well with other heads or even combos, where it adds a welcome boost in the low end and overall presence. Thanks to its solid construction and high power handling, the cabinet is well suited to more demanding stage use. It's worth noting, though, that it's no featherweight – it tips the scales at 39kg. For moving it around, the G412A is fitted with two sturdy side handles and (more importantly!) four removable castors. For anyone after an even more classic voicing, Harley Benton also offers a more expensive version of the G412 loaded with Celestion Vintage 30 speakers.

About Harley Benton

Since 1998, the Harley Benton brand has been catering for the needs of countless guitarists and bassists. In addition to an extensive range of stringed instruments, Thomann's house brand also offers a wide choice of amplifiers, speakers, effect pedals, and other accessories. In total, the range includes over 1,500 products. Built by established names in the industry, all Harley Benton products combine quality and reliability at attractive and affordable prices. The continuous expansion of the range ensures that Harley Benton always provides new, exciting, and innovative products that keep players perfectly in tune with the musical world, day after day.

A full-body experience

Admittedly, large and heavy 4x12 cabinets like the Harley Benton G412A can feel a little out of step with modern setups. But the sensation of four 12" speakers moving enough air to be felt physically is something quite unique. This type of cabinet comes from a time before advanced PA systems, when guitarists often had to fill the entire venue from the stage alone. As a result, on stage at a large Rock'n'Roll gig remains its natural habitat. Paired with a suitably powerful head, the G412A has no trouble holding its own against even the loudest drummers – and if it ever isn't enough, there's always the option of adding a second cab, especially for this price. At home, it's unlikely that the kind of power the G412A can put out will ever be able to be enjoyed to the full, but appearances can be misleading: Even at lower volumes, a 4x12 still delivers a full and authoritative sound.

Great for Price

I wanted a cheap cab to leave in rehersals suitable for various heads...as one is a Fender with only 4ohm out this was ideal with the 4/16 ohm option in mono.In fact it was the deciding factor as nothing else seemed to offer 4 ond 16!
It is smaller overall than my Marshalls, which suits,I was expecting MDF but this is ply like the vintage version, all good there.
The speakers are unbranded but look robust and sound just fine...this cab performs perfectly well.
The castors however are total junk, and arrived already bent....however Tube Amp Doctor Fender-style castors are a direct fit and worth the ¤25 to have the cab move easily....I included them with an order of tubes and had them fitted in about 10mins.The actual attachment method is good, two screws and two bolts into threaded inserts and I reused the HB fixings.
The "tolex" is soft and will mark easily...again good as the heads are all old and battered,it will match before long!
Overall I'm pleased with this, its basically solid and there's nothing that can't be easily changed out as time passes so I expect to get a lot of years out of it...in fact I think it will be gigged at times as it is that bit lighter and more compact...

A beast of a cabinet
Mousquetaire 13.08.2020
A monstrous cabinet. Much larger than i expected. I use it with a boss katana 100w head. The sound is massive even on the 0.5w setting, which is more than enough for house practice. On the 50w and 100w setting the cabinet really show his presence and his might while retaining great clarity. You don't need that powerful of an amp to feel the thunderous force of the 4x12'' celestion speakers. More than enough to gig. It's a very heavy and large cabinet, but easily movable on his wheel. For transports you will need an other set of arms to help you when you meet stairs. Very happy with my purchase.

Compliments to Thomann!

A very cheap 4x12 cabinet with enough punch for metal sounds. It is ofcourse not comparable with its bigger brother which is fitted with Celestions but it is a very good cabinet to start with.

The finish of the tolex is not state of the art however, and the trolley wheels are not that sturdy as It came with a bent one at delivery. However the wheels are removeable and the rubbers will keep it in place during a high volume session.

Is used combined with a Bugera G5 infinium, Harley Benton Ultimate Drive, Behringer NR300 Noise Reducer and Harley Benton Vintage Overdrive. It really sounds well, you will never get anything alike for the same budget! approx ~ 550-600 eu.
