A customisable cab for two 12-inchers

The Harley Benton G212Plus Unloaded guitar cabinet is the ideal choice for any guitarist looking for a flexible, powerful, and affordable speaker cab that can be configured to suit their individual preferences. This "unloaded" cabinet comes without speakers, so it can be fitted with any two 12" speakers, allowing guitarists to customise their sound to the last detail. Another key feature is the three-part rear panel, which means the cab can be used either open or closed – perfect for musicians who want to optimise their sound to suit the setting and style. The two-speaker cabs in the Harley Benton range, unloaded or not, also have a stereo switch on the control panel, allowing the speakers to output any suitable stereo source.

Decisions, decisions!

The Harley Benton G212Plus Unloaded gives users absolute freedom when it comes to the 12" speakers they choose to fit it with. Some musicians will want a full, heavy sound for Rock or Metal; others prefer a crisp, articulate tone for Funk or Jazz – selecting the right speakers is key. Of course, the G212 is also suitable as a replacement cabinet for an existing speaker setup; it couldn't be easy to install the new speakers, which can be simply inserted from the front after the speaker grille is removed. The package also includes a set of M4 screws, allowing the speakers to be mounted securely. The connection cables are soldered to the jack sockets and fitted with solder-free 1/4" speaker connectors at the other end, making for straightforward installation without the need for additional tools. The use of 16-ohm speakers is recommended to ensure optimal operation.

Individually configured

The Harley Benton G212Plus Unloaded speaker cab is a good choice for price-conscious guitarists who are looking to personalise and configure their speaker setup. Its robust dependability, flexible customisability, and unbeatable affordability make it a reliable tool for players who don't want to leave anything to chance in their quest for the "perfect sound". In addition to its acoustic properties, of course, it's almost equally important for a guitar cab to be solidly built, so as to withstand the inevitable knocks on stage and in the van. This is a given with the G212, thanks to the metal corner guards, as well as the robust fabric covering that helps protect the substantial 18mm plywood housing, which is composed of a lightweight falcata core and a tough meranti back and top layer.

About Harley Benton

Since 1998, the Harley Benton brand has been catering for the needs of countless guitarists and bassists. In addition to an extensive range of stringed instruments, Thomann's house brand also offers a wide choice of amplifiers, speakers, effect pedals, and other accessories. In total, the range includes over 1,500 products. Built by established names in the industry, all Harley Benton products combine quality and reliability at attractive and affordable prices. The continuous expansion of the range ensures that Harley Benton always provides new, exciting, and innovative products that keep players perfectly in tune with the musical world, day after day.

Enough power for rehearsals and concerts

It's not always necessary to roll out the "heavy artillery": For a lot of typical sessions or gigs, a pair of 12" speakers in a compact cabinet is frequently enough to achieve sufficient volume and presence when used with with a top, a guitar combo, or a modeller. And the Harley Benton G212Plus Unloaded is certainly compact, as well as weighing in at just 12.3kg. It's technically flexible too, of course, with its integrated stereo mode and modular rear panel. By the way: The Harley Benton G212 is also available as a vertical Unloaded version, as well as there being a vareity of "loaded" version with different speakers built in.

Looks great, sounds even better

I'd start by stating upfront that Harley Benton does a priceless job by offering these unloaded guitar cabinets. Many of us have their preferred speakers at home that they ordered separately, it is a pointless waste to buy a new cab with a speaker they won't use. What is missing from the series is a large closed back 1x12, IMHO. And maybe different finishes, like cream tolex or tweed :)

I own a number of 1x12 cabinets which sound good themselves, but I could not find the tone I was looking for with them, in particular because they sound too boxy, including the Thiele. Because I tried everything and also I have two speakers that I prefer, I decided to pull the trigger on a 2x12. Although with a larger footprint, I picked the horizontal because this variation normally sounds fuller than a vertical, and I believe this one is more appropriate for a pair of different speakers: you don't want one to overcome the other depending on the position of the listener.

I could not be more happy about the tone! The cabinet resonance doesn't stand in the way. It's neat, smooth and clear, maybe a bit on the fuller side. I only used it fully closed back so far, but it has the option to open 1/2 or 2/3 from the back - one could not ask for more functionality.

In terms of build, this cab is quite large, makes the others I own look like toys LOL! Despite its volume, it is fairly light, even with the speakers mounted in. Its design is classy, its finish is sexy. The front panel is slightly slanted, projecting the sound towards the player and not to their feet.

I only found two small issues with the build. The tolex edges on the inside are peeled, here and there. Nothing visible on the outside, though. The other thing is, when I screwed the speakers in, I could not reach a stopping point with the bolts. I am not sure if they are holding on a metal nut or directly in the plywood. I was afraid to stretch it too far, to avoid drilling the holes loose, so I stopped at a certain point, but I must say that the drivers stay fixed quite well to the baffle.

Now it came the time to state that Thomann's services are top notch! It was a bit of a ride to find the gear I needed in respect to cab and speakers (and not only), and I had to test and return a couple of items. It was painless, 'nuff said. Even in the conditions when the normal postal service returned cabinets from the customs, Thomann always offered a solution and they did it fast. Actually, they consistently offered great services for years, not changing with the wind, building trust with their customers. Much appreciated!

This is a high quality 212 cabinet, and comes supplied with clear wiring diagrams for series/parallel wiring options of your choice of speakers. The cab is well constructed, and the choice of back panel options is also already provided for. It's a win win!!

Sehr gutes Preisleistungsverhältnis!
Athur Dent 23.04.2023
