Japanese e-drums, acoustic philosophy

The Efnote 3 Style-A is a premium electronic drum kit from Japanese manufacturer Efnote, built around a philosophy of acoustic realism rather than electronic versatility. The kit uses monocoque FRP (fibre-reinforced plastic) shells – chosen for stiffness and durability – mounted on three Lambda tripod stands that give the kit a distinctive, almost avant-garde – and yet eminently stage-ready – appearance. The Style-A configuration includes one crash cymbal; the Style-B variant adds a second for players who want a fuller setup from the outset. The EFD-3 sound module is operated via a touchscreen interface with 16 preset kits and 34 user kit slots, drawing on a library of multi-layer acoustic samples recorded and mastered by Efnote. Kick pedal, hi-hat stand, and drum throne are sold separately.

Pads, cymbal response, and multi-optical 3D sensing

Pad sizes are generous: 12×4" kick, 12×4" snare, two 10×3.5" toms, a 12×4" floor tom, 12" two-piece hi-hat, 14" crash, and 16" ride – all in white sparkle finish with warm-grey cymbals. The ELISE sensing processor handles dynamic input across all pads with low latency and a wide dynamic range, capturing ghost notes and subtle dynamic gradations without retriggering. The Tru-Motion hi-hat uses multi-optical 3D sensing to capture the full range of hi-hat motion – open, closed, half-open, and foot chick – more accurately than a single-sensor controller. Crash and ride cymbals are 3-zone (bow, edge, and cup); the free-swinging design responds to angle and position across the full surface. The snare offers three distinct zones – head, rim, and side-rim – the last operating without a switch via an arc design that makes rimshots and cross-sticks reliable under pressure.

Who the Efnote 3 suits

The Efnote 3 Style-A is aimed at drummers who prioritise acoustic realism over breadth of electronic sound design – the library focuses almost exclusively on acoustic drum and cymbal samples, recorded without third-party involvement. Players coming from Roland or Yamaha kits will likely find the sound palette narrower; the Efnote's strength is the quality and authenticity of what it includes rather than the quantity. The Style-A footprint of approximately 140×90cm makes it viable in most home studios and rehearsal rooms without significant reconfiguration. For drummers who want an instrument that feels and sounds like an acoustic kit and comes across convincingly on stage, the Efnote 3 makes a strong case.

About Efnote

Efnote was founded in 2018 by former employees of the Roland e-drum development department. The company’s portfolio includes various e-drum sets in the upper price range, with the greatest value being placed on maximum sonic authenticity. In terms of both design and technology, Efnote’s e-drum sets offer innovative features such as module operation via touchscreen, cymbal pads with a 360° playing surface, and eye-catching hardware systems. The most popular model is the Efnote 5, which looks like a conventional acoustic drum kit with its birch wood shells and sparkling silver foil.

Stage, rehearsal, and home studio

Mesh heads generate considerably less acoustic noise than conventional drums – in a live band context, overall stage volume can be managed without overwhelming the stage mix. The Setlist function lets song order, tempo, and kit settings be configured in advance and recalled per song – useful for a gigging band running to a setlist. For recording, the EFD-3 outputs eight individual channels simultaneously over USB 2.0 at 24bit/48kHz to Mac or Windows (ASIO), with 4-channel analogue output and MIDI over USB and 5-pin DIN. The headphone output delivers 320mW per channel at 32 ohms – sufficient for stage monitoring without an external headphone amp. The Stroke Analyzer – combining Stroke Scope (strike point visualisation on a timeline) and Accuracy Score (quantified timing analysis per element) – provides structured practice feedback, while the Bluetooth input streams audio straight from a phone to play against, without additional hardware.

Hello. I am extremely pleased with the professionalism of the entire Thomann.de team. I was served in the most perfect way from purchase to delivery. Everything was delivered within 5 working days and very well packaged. The drums are the best I have played in my 43 years of experience, 30 of which were professionally. Those who are wondering whether to buy Efnote, I would tell them not to think about it at all. Stay healthy and I wish you happy holidays. (This is my first time buying from you, but it certainly won't be the last). Good luck to all of you.
