The 1010music Nanobox Fireball is an eight-voice polyphonic wavetable synth crammed into an ultra-compact casing. It's got one oscillator and a pair of wavetables, and users can fluidly morph between the sounds using the X/Y touchscreen. The sounds can be further shaped using two filters, two envelopes, and two LFOs, and there's even a built-in sequencer for programming modulations. To top it all off, there are six effects on board to add that final touch of magic. Whether it's powerful, aggressive drones or lush, ambient pads, there's loads of sonic potential packed into this tiny box – and with the microSD card it ships with, it's easy to keep expanding with personalised wavetables.
The Nanobox Fireball's immediately clear interface comprises a 2" touchscreen, two endless encoders, and four buttons – a clean, straightforward setup that makes for an intuitive workflow. On the device's integrated microSD card, there are 123 presets ready to go; the 103 wavetables make use of 256 cycles with 2048 samples each. For those after a more personal touch, sounds can be shaped using the two multimode filters and a pair of envelopes. The finishing touches come from the set of six onboard effects: flanger, phaser, distortion, chorus, delay, and reverb. Internally, everything's processed at 32-bit, while the converters output signals at 24-bit. The oscillators run at 96kHz, with the rest of the system ticking along at 48kHz.
The Nanobox Fireball's an excellent choice for audio artists after a compact wavetable synth that they can always have at hand whenever inspiration strikes. It's not much larger than a pack of playing cards, but there's so much sonic potential in there – and it's easy for users to keep expanding their libraries with their own .wav files: Now every musician can fit their back catalogue in their back pocket. The minimalistic interface makes the Fireball easy to learn and easy to work with. With the mini-TRS to MIDI adapter cable included as standard, it can also be controlled via external devices, meaning there are endless options for creative sound shaping. Power comes via the matching red USB-C cable, keeping things looking nice and tidy.
1010music was founded in Los Angeles in 2016 and focuses on digital solutions for musical applications. Prior to creating their own products, the developers at 1010music had all worked for renowned companies on large software projects such as Native Instrument's Traktor DJ. 1010Music’s creative modules – designed for Eurorack modular systems such as samplers, loopers, sequencers, synthesizers and effects – combine digital technology with analogue controls and are operated via multifunctional touch displays.
Lined up neatly on the top edge of the Nanobox Fireball are all the ports needed to integrate it seamlessly into any setup. It accepts MIDI commands via the MIDI input, and that signal can be passed on to other gear via the MIDI output. The Fireball supports note on/off, mod wheel, sustain, pitch bend, mono and poly aftertouch, CC messages, and clock signals. There's also a clock input for syncing up external hardware. Because of its tiny size, the synth outputs stereo signals through two 3.5mm jacks. If it's going into a pro setup, a breakout cable (sold separately) will be a necessary accessory.
