Mooer Preamp Model X2

The idea is that amps are heavy and cannot be carried around, so these pedals exist.
So I chose this pedal because I wanted to make my pedalboard capable of playing ampless for the usual situations (no amp available, or can't use one because it's too loud at that time etc) without abbandoning the rest of my analog pedals.
I simply remove the channel footswitch for amps that i keep on my board and put this on. I ve tried other preamps before they were fine except for the cabinet simulation, the reason I chose this one is that it comes with (and can load) impulse responses so I don't need a second pedal for it.
As with most digital amp emulations, the distorted sounds can be very acceptable, the cleans are not as good as an amplifier (quite compressed but with not much more sustain). The actual sounds are nice, but the differences between the models are mostly around the eq, you can easily match the sounds between them with adjusting the pedal.

It has the ability to "capture" an amp , but nothing like a kemper, : you need to use the ge labs app that is only available for ios. I used an old iphone to do that (with a cable that costs 50 euros extra ) and I would say it does capture the essence but only the instant that the amp is set up at that time , meaning if you capture it with everything at 12 (or the settings you choose) it ll sound very close to that, but if you increase the gain on the pedal, or the mids or any eq then it adds it's own, and the result is that all the amp models do not sound that much different after all. It has some eq adjustment while the profiling is being captured but it's not very easy to match. It can capture the preamp only or the whole amp (with the cabinet- if you use a microphone as well),
So all in all, it has capabilites unlike any other on this category, and it's a great backup to have. If you re used to tube amps like me, then no way this or any pedal like this can ever replace one, but if you want the occasional portability a multieffect unit offers but hate the multieffect menus, well, this probably is the one to put on your pedalboard

EDIT: Just a heads up, once the cabinet simulation is on, the volume rises a few db and may clip pedals after it if they can't support line level. This includes the ir's that come with also the majority of 3d party IRs. The solution for this is to edit an IR by lowering around 12-15db.
I use cubase, simply load the IR in wav format as audio, lower the output volume by 15db and export it and then load it to the pedal

Nachdem ich mit dem Preamp von Flamma FS06 leider einen Fehlgriff tätigte, siehe meine Rezension dazu (harscher Sound, defekt nach einem Tag), habe ich nun doppelt so viel Geld in die Hand genommen und mir den Mooer Preamp X2 gekauft. Mooer ist zwar auch ein chinesischer Hersteller aber mit offenbar längerer Erfahrung. Natürlich darf man bei diesem Stomp nicht erwarten, man könne mit einem 150 €-Pedal alle Klassiker-Amps wie Fender, Marshall oder VOX ersetzen.

Die Praxis: Wenn ich das Gitarren-Signal an meinen sicher nicht repräsentativen Fender Röhren Hotrod (Made 1995 in den USA) lege, bekomme ich ein plastisches Soundbild, schön warm, schmeichelnd und kraftvoll. Verwende ich die Mooer Emulationen klingt das Signal dagegen flacher und aufdringlich im Mittelband. Auch die drei EQ-Bänder lassen nicht wirklich viel Spielraum der Klangregelung zu. Ich empfinde den Gesamtklang durch alle Presets hindurch keinesfalls als Verbesserung. Daher hier einen Stern Abzug.

Dennoch bietet der Preamp viele lohnende Optionen, weil dieser als Distortion-Pedal keine schlechte Figur macht. Allerdings wird auch hier der Sound nicht plastischer. Zwar wird das Signal ordentlich verzerrt. Es bleibt aber bei einem unlebendigen Klangbild so wie ich das von Softwareemulationen her kenne. Hier auch wieder ein Punkt Abzug.

Passabel ist der Onlinezugang zu weiteren Amps- und Boxen-Modifikationen mittels USB-Anschluss mit Software für Mac und PC. Hier lässt sich dann ein individuelles Soundbild zusammen basteln, wobei ein solcher Fußtreter nicht wirklich einen mikrofonierten Marshall-Stack wiedergeben kann. Das sei hier noch einmal klar gestellt. Es bleibt bei allen Kombinationen ein flacher Spound ohne Leben. Dennoch lassen sich so vielfältige Sounds generieren.

Wer wirklich authentische Classicrock-Stücke recorden möchte, der sollte doch lieber mikrofonieren und einen repräsentativen Amp im Studio haben. Das klingt dann nochmal ganz anders, ergo viel plastischer und fleischiger. Statt 2 Sterne für den Flamma dieses Mal 3 Sterne für das bessere Konzept und das hervorragende Preis-Leistungsverhältnis. Dazu kommt die Garantieverlängerung auf 4 Jahre bei Registrierung. Das ist sehr viel Gegenwert für diesen Preis.

Empfehlung: Ich habe das Gerät schnell wieder verkauft und mich für den "Blackstar Dept. 10 Dual Drive" entschlossen. Der Preamp ist leider bei Thomann nicht mehr lieferbar. Der verdient wirklich 5 glatte Sterne. Hier muss man dann zwar wieder mehr als 100 € aufschlagen, aber nun wird der Unterschied zur billigen Chinaware mehr als deutlich. Juhu! Die Gitarre lebt wieder. Das liegt sicher an der verbauten Röhre im Stomp. Chinesen haben einfach keine Vorstellung davon, wie etwas klingen muss. Woher sollten sie das auch haben. Im letzten Jahrhundert der großen Gitarrensounds war China noch im Mittelalter. Die können zwar heute billig produzieren, aber ohne die Vorgaben von etablierten Firmen kriegen die das einfach nicht wirklich gebacken. Daher spart euch das Geld für ein gutes Produkt wie das von Blackstar. Man muss heute einfach 300 € für einen Fußtreter veranschlagen, siehe Vahlbruch. Unsere Entwickler hier wissen einfach worauf es ankommt und was wir hören wollen. Vahlbruch z.B. baut seine Geräte handmade in Germany. Das sollte einem einfach ein paar Euro mehr Wert sein. Mir war diese Odysee wirklich eine Lehre ....
