Avantone CK-40

Purchased this in october and the delivery was here within 5 days. The build quality is amazing; the case provided is sturdy and the foam fits each piece perfectly. The wooden case for the actual microphone is a pretty addition and the felt lining ensures no damage or scratches. The build of the mic is of good quality as well as it's solid and even though the capsules rotate the mic doesn't rattle or shake. One feature that had me a bit let down is the fact that you cannot have -10dB pad and a HPF rolloff at the same time as it's controlled by the same switch. The FET circuitry provides a bright tone without being too harsh and has a well-round low-frequency response.

I recently used this on a Vox AC30 (with a DanElectro guitar) placed with both capsules in cardioid facing the rear of the cone and received an excellent capture. The mic captures a lot more high end information than you'd imagine with little noise.

On solo male vocals, the mic works wonders using just one capsule (though I was nervous about only having one XLR plugged into the splitter) and captures a crisp sound, albeit some sibilance which can be easily cured in the mix stage.

Would recommend for a mid-range LDC at an excellent price.

"Das sieht ja echt wertig aus" dachte ich beim Öffnen des Koffers: Schöne Holzschachtel, in der das rote Mikro liegt. Gute Spinne mit zwei Ersatzgummis. Sieht man sonst auch nicht. Windschutz. Muss man sonst extra kaufen. Sogar ein Stromkalbel ist dabei. Wird gar nicht benötigt, kann man aber immer mal für was anderes gebrauchen. Und das Ganze in einem Alukoffer. So weit, so gut.

Dann habe ich das Mikro in die Spinne und auf eine Stativ geschraubt. Anschluss an eine RME Babyface und ein MacBook Pro mit Cubase. Und was ich dann hörte war unfassbar: Lautes Pfeifen im Kopfhörer!!! Ich wollte das Mikro für MS Streofonie einsetzen und hatte oben die Acht und unten eine Niere gewählt. Aufgrund des Pfeifens habe ich dann die Einstellungen verändert. Und auch das Pfeifen veränderte sich. Je nach Einstellung der Richtcharakteristiken zwischen 5,8 kHz und ca. 12 kHz (kann man ja bei Cubase schön ablesen).

Außerdem war die obere Membran scheinbar nicht richtig im Gehäuse montiert. Trotz Spinne gab es lautes Krachen bei kleinsten Bewegungen.

Zu diesem Gesamteindruck passt dann auch noch der Text der Gebrauchtsanweisung: Hier steht als Anmerkung, dass man dieses Mikro gut für MS Stereofonie einsetzen kann, wenn man ein Zweites kauft. Wenn nicht einmal der Hersteller bemerkt, dass bereits zwei Kapseln verbaut wurden.....

Mein Exemplar taugte leider gar nicht. Es ist wieder auf dem Weg zurück nach Thomann.

Werde wohl doch noch etwas sparen und mir dann das Audio Technica 4050ST oder noch etwas später ein Berliner Mikro zulegen...
