A balanced problem solver for the rack

The Millenium PB16 XLR In/Out is a 16-channel analogue patchbay, with the channels in this model divided into two blocks of eight, one for inputs and one for outputs. Unlike most patchbays that rely on jack or Bantam plugs, the PB16 XLR In/Out is equipped exclusively with three-pin XLR sockets, making the patchbay perfect for handling fully balanced XLR connections. Housed in a sturdy metal enclosure that occupies just a single rack unit, it provides a convenient and space-efficient solution, and with its excellent price-performance ratio, it proves to be a true problem solver whether installed in a studio or integrated into a live rack.

No influence on the sound

A patchbay like the Millenium PB16 XLR In/Out serves a dual purpose, keeping the cabling behind the rack neat and organised while at the same time bringing hard-to-reach connectors forward to the workstation for easy access. The outputs and inputs of the devices connect to the rear panel, while short, standard microphone or XLR cables can then be used on the front panel to establish the desired signal flow, eliminating the need for special or costly patch cables. In the PB16 XLR In/Out, the pins of the corresponding inputs and outputs are directly linked, a configuration known in studio terminology as "hard-wired" and because of this design, the patchbay is acoustically transparent, meaning it has no impact whatsoever on the sound.

Flexible handling of balanced signals

The Millenium PB16 XLR In/Out comes in a sturdy 19" metal case, designed with enough depth to provide easy access to the rear connectors without causing cables to stick out unnecessarily. As an analogue XLR patchbay, the device provides flexible handling of balanced signals and proves especially useful in the studio, where it helps to bring order to tangled cabling and eliminates the need to crawl behind the rack just to re-route signal or monitoring paths. One point to keep in mind, however, is when using microphones with phantom power: The supply voltage should always be switched off before reconnecting, as leaving it active can risk damaging both the microphone and the preamp.

About Millenium

Millenium is one of Thomann's in-house brands and has been an integral part of the store’s range since 1995. More than 800 products – from drums and percussion through to accessories such as microphone stands, racks, and recording workstations – bear the Millenium label. These products are made by renowned companies who also manufacture products for other well-known brands. Since they are imported directly from the factory without any further distributors or sales companies, they can be sold at particularly attractive prices. Incidentally, one in every four Thomann customers has already purchased at least one Millenium product.

More flexible in the studio and much faster live

The convenient advantages of an analogue XLR patchbay are immediately clear, especially in a studio rack paired with an API Lunchbox (art. no. 343763) offering eight slots for a wide range of 500 series cassette modules. By connecting the inputs and outputs to the rear of the PB16 XLR In/Out, different combinations of microphones, preamps, and compressors can be tested quickly from the front simply by swapping cables, all without leaving the monitoring position. The benefits extend to live use as well, for instance, when working with a rack mixer such as the Behringer X32 Rack (art. no. 310536). In this case, the PB16 XLR In/Out brings the rear connections forward, streamlining the setup and making it much faster and more convenient to cable a live band.

Really good unit...
tonymckenzie.com 17.01.2022
I bought this as a way of getting the I/O from outboard to the front of my rack for patching effects units around a bit - and it works really well.

There are no quality issues that I could see with the unit I bought and its used all the time in a studio.

Good price and operationally as you might expect from a more expensive unit.

Does what it's supposed to... and nothing else... and it's huge
toughluck 03.11.2025
So the headline might not make sense. Let me explain.

My needs changed. I need 12 inputs and 4 outputs.
I was hoping that inside the patch bay there are inputs and outputs connected by a cable, hence the size and it would only require unscrewing the front and back and flipping the connectors.

Unfortunately, they're connected through a PCB, so it's not an easy swap.

But if it's a PCB, it's unnecessarily deep for that. It could have been half or even a third of the depth and it would have still worked.

Does the job
Wibbers 02.11.2025
Like almost everyone else I use this to allow easy access to the XLR ins and outs on the back of my rack mixer from the front panel. It does the job perfectly and it's very reasonably priced.
