I use the banjo for dixieland jazz on amateur level. The banjo required some setup after it arrived in order to be playable. I had to tighten the rod behind the skin in order to get a decent string action. The skin needed tightening as well. In other words, some setup skills are required. This is not an expensive banjo and there are a few details where this shows: one of the tuners is a bit hard to operate as the shaft gets slightly stuck by the string pull; the ?hooks? for tightening the rim have rough threads and a few of them are a bit hard to tighten. However, these are shortcomings that can be expected in this price range and I was able to get the instrument setup and tuned the way it should be without too much effort. The finish is OK, the neck is straight and it plays well overall. A good low budget banjo!

I wanted a banjo that did nor ring out too loud and was more of a dead pan sound. This Banjo does this for me. The quality is not best but for what I paid I think it is great value

excellent sound - needs set-up
Roy4495 31.01.2024
Once set up, this banjo sounds better than others that cost 5x more. That said, mine needed the nut that attaches the neck to the pot to be tightened (it was spinning freely on the bolt). The coordinator rod was loose as well. I changed to Earnie Ball Tenor banjo light strings CGDA and the sound is amazing. Also the frets needed serious dressing, they were quite sharp along the edge of the fretboard. All this is entirely doable and does not affect the final playability, but it really must be done. I originally thought I would add a tone ring, but the sound is so good, there's no need. So I would definitely recommend buying this banjo, but you will need to set it up, or maybe call Thomann first and tell them to go over it before sending it.

Nice sound.

My kid used this to win a local ITM competition after only playing for 6 weeks. The fibre skin head gets lots of positive attention.
