49SL MkIII is the MIDI-controller I've always dreamed of and then some

I bought this particular controller on January 2021. So I've had it for a good two years and I still keep finding new ways to incorporate this into my music-making process. I started out with Ableton and the controller integrates into Live's workflow perfectly: recording, editing, adjusting plugins (or devices, rather) and overall controlling volumes, mutes and all. Then I slowly graduated to using the SL49 MkIII as a "brain" for my current setup with hardware synths, and it's working wonders. For the type of noise, I'm indulging in at the moment, this workflow is even faster and more intuitive than Ableton (which is very fast once you learn the ropes). Basically now I fire up the gear and press record and keep going ad infinitum. As a cherry on top, I just updated Components, the librarian/editorial software from Novation and had some minor hiccups. One quick email to Novation's support and I got an instant reply and a solution to a very strange problem (Mac OSX related). So even on the support front, this is a fast, easy-to-operate experience. For the money, can't recommend this enough.

Great but could be better

As a workhorse midi keyboard and controller its great.
The keyboard feels very nice and all other hardware too except for the sliders, they feel a bit cheap.

The two problems I have are that the sequencer is really cumbersome to use. Really very much designed for people playing 4 beat loops that are locked 100% to the grid. With a bit of perseverance you can work it into an okay workflow, but overall its uninspiring and does not lend itself to live use at all. I really hope they improve it with some updates.

The other is the Novation Components sofware/web app. This is also an overly basic piece of software that does not match the price point of the keyboard at all. Really frustrated by this. Feels like somebody telling me to build a house of cards with one hand tied behind my back.

For those interested in the CV capabilities, I've found they work quite fine. The midi-cv clock conversion is rock solid and the pitch tracking works fine.

So in conclusion, if you're wanting a studio control hub it's great. If you're wanting a live performance tool, it's still one of the best options, but don't expect much from the sequencer.

Nice master keyboard.

Key size great, knobs, buttons and pw/mw great, pads ok, size ideal.
Features, amazing (customizability in almost everything)
Handling in standalone great, otherwise... meh (I would prefer to be able to program it in standalone mode, their app is a drag).
Very happy with the purchase,
Thomann delivery as always in time, despite co-vid!
