I bought this device for two purposes
1. Attenuating my 1987x
So, I have a Marshall 1987x and it has been great amp to play with; even without attenuation since you can quiet it down also by using some volume pot in the loop. But I wanted to get the volume down and not restrict how strong signal would be going to the poweramp so I looked for attenuators and since this is in very good price, I decided to give it a go. It has now been in use for less than a month so I cannot speak about durability. It gets my amp quiet enough to enjoy playing without any earplugs and to me it does it in good enough manner for me to maintain most of the sound. It seems to eat sound a little but for me this has been a good way to get to know what kind of tools these attenuators are and this thing gets a solid 9/10 for attenuation in this price range.
2. Profiling using the line out
I also bought this so that I could profile my amp in my QC for night time playing etc. I did 2 profiles of it and as I tried my profiles I was disappointed. I then decided that I take my QC out of the equation and try to reamp my sound through a solid state poweramp. So I put my 4x12 in stereo mode, set both amps in 8 ohms and then played so that first I listened to the sound which went through attenuator to one pair of speakers and it sounded great; then I silenced the amp using dummy load mode in this attenuator and put up some volume in my solid state poweramp (the other 2 speakers on the same cab) and there was the reason why I was disappointed in my profiles....the sound was really, I mean really dark compared to my amps real sound. It was (to my ear) very comparable to a sound of just an overdrive pedal running into poweramp without any eq or presence added. Completelely useless line out for my purposes. 2/10 points in this regard
So, I now have mixed feelings here, maybe I get another attenuator for profiling at some point, as for now I keep this only for attenuation. If a better product overall will find its way here, then this might go for my other amp or I might let it go, but that is not a thing for me to worry about now.
Even with its flaws I think it is not bad for the price. I think it has a good enough quality for attenuating purposes and it is definitely impressive to see that it has all these features in it but the price is so low. Hopefully it is just down to my bad luck having a bad line out or they take these in testing and do some updating on that side of things. In the end I would say it is already great to have a product like this in this price range even if it was only for attenuating a loud amp.
EDIT: After some time of using this product, I finally read the manual and found out that there is a cabinet emulation going on through the line out so THAT is why my tone was so dark and muddy on reamping and profiling, I contacted Harley Benton about it and yes, there indeed is that and you cannot disengage it.
