I installed this Tone Zone on a basswood Ibanez with rosewood fretboard, on a very bright sounding Hamer Slammer Californian and on an Ibanez PGM301 (basswood body and maple fretboard).
According to my experience, this is an excellent pickup to add bass and lower mids to bright sounding guitars. Lots of crunch on rhythm, and sustain & full sound when soloing in the higher registry. My guitarist uses it in an Ibanez Prestige with maple fretboard and his sound is excellent.
I would thus recommend the TZ for recording, as the (bright) guitar will now be capable to stand alone in the mix.
In a band setting though, I think it works better with a very middy or trebly amp, as it might sound too scooped otherwise and wouldn't come through.
I would not recommend this pickup on warm (or even worse, muddy) instruments, as it adds too much bottom. Also because it sounds rather compressed by the high output and overall design (very modern sounding indeed).
So overall, in the right guitar and with the right equalization, this pickup brings an excellent, solid sound.
