Beats the Fethead with 10.000 points (ohms?)
Tazmanian Ninja 08.09.2020
I've had two FetHeads (regular + Germanian version) and then decided to also try out this one. And I was BEYOND AMAZED. Especially for ribbon microphones feeding into medium (and low) input-impedance preamps.

But even with high impedance preamps that are more than 10x the impedance of the mic (which is the minimum requirement, as a rule-of-thumb) my ribbons sound markedly better, through the DM1.

More highs, clearer mids, tighter bottom. It has seriously liberated the innate potential of my ribbon microhones!

If you look at the website of sE, you'll see some graphs showing at least part of the reason why (the impedance). But there may be more technical wizardry going on inside.

I have a hunch that sE learned quite a lot from Rupert Neve when they collaborated with him (they've said so themselves), which was subsequently funneled into their VR1 and VR2 ribbon mics (one of them active, i.e. likely with some of the same electronics as the DM1). And in turn, some of that was funneled into their X1R, which has become my favorite ribbon mic so far. Even beyond the VR1 which I also tried.

Bottom-line: discard the generic "you need a Cloudlifter" and "get a FetHead" – and instead get the DM1. The build-quality is top-notch too, btw!

Does the job, but not quietly. Don't recommend.
preampreviewer 19.02.2022
Well, it looks amazing, and is cheaper than a cloudlifter, so that's good.

If you need something inline to boost your mics, this will do the job, but in my experience, it picks up A LOT of noise. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but the connection between the mic (Shure sm7b) and xlr never felt super tight, and this led to a lot of unwanted noise in my recordings.

Not all the time, mind you, but that's the problem. It is inconsistent. Sometimes it does the job exactly as it should, and the recordings are clean. Sometimes it picks up all kinds of noise, and these bleed into the recordings. It happens at random, and I've never been able to isolate what causes it.

SO, for this reason, I do not recommend this product. It just isn't consistent and clean enough.

I wound up replacing it with a triton fethed, and the difference is night and day. Connection is super tight, sound quality is amazing, and 100% clean. Pluse, the triton fethed is about 40eur cheaper, and about 25% smaller. So, I'd recommend going for the fethed for your gain needs!

Making music fun again
Kwade 06.01.2022
It's an inline preamp. It's not supposed to be more than an almost invisible extension to mic's needing a bit of help. It does this excellently, as most tend to do, but it's also fun, and there's something to be said for that. It comes packaged like a stick of dynamite, is deep red and says dynamite on it. It makes you smile, and I don't know any other inline preamps that do that. I'll support a brand for that reason alone.

Bang for you buck..
Tom Cross 19.04.2019
After some research online I found this to be a very reasonably priced mic activator/ preamp which would allow me to use my SM7B and Ribbon mics to their full potential.. Thomann kindly stocked it and I placed my order. First impressions this is a very cool looking device. It comes in a small box that looks like a stick of dynamite stick so I'm surprised it made it through airport security :) It is connected directly to your microphone and uses 48v from your preamp to power. It delivers 28db of clean gain so you no longer have to crank your preamp when recording quieter sources.. It will not pass 48v on to your ribbon so it's completely safe to use with them.. I've also used it to join up long cable runs with great sucess. Would definitely recommend this to anyone who's looking for a cheaper alternative to cloudlifter / fethead and from the reviews I've watched online it performs better at a fraction of the price.. A++
