Calf is back on the menu
When Remo introduced the plastic drumhead back in the 1950's it was good news for drummers and calves alike: Finally you got a drumhead that weren't sensive to temperature changes and wet conditions when playing outdoors. Now Remo has gone full circle and has introduced a plastic drumhead which supposedly should emulate the sound of the old calfskin heads. Do they? Well, for good reasons I haven't tried real calf skin heads, but I can say this: These heads have a really nice, warm and focused sound. I have them mounted on my toms on two different kits: A Gretsch jazz kit with a pretty high tuning, and a vintage Ludwig kit with a medium low tuning. In both cases the toms sound absolutely great, both acustically and when miked up. These heads might not be to everybodys taste, but if you're looking for a vintage sound with a modern edge, they are definitely worth checking out.
