Harley Benton P-Bass Copy.
Cian Mullane 19.01.2020
I was more than pleasantly surprised by this bass. I bought it on a whim as I had loved their jazz bass copy which I bought second hand for practically nothing and gigged into the ground. For such inexpensive instruments Harley Benton seriously know how to produce a bass that is worth atleast 5 times what you pay for them. I have used their jazz bass copy for over 2 years and their P-bass copy since I received it a month ago and I have never had a singly problem with them despite gigging with them regularly and having them thrown under busses, planes and on the floor on occasion.

Pros:
Frets are all level and neck is smooth with no marks or dents
Tuning pegs are smooth and surprisingly strong and sturdy
The single P-bass pickup is hotter and much better than anticipated
Looks really cool too

Cons:
It's considerably lighter than my other basses and the wiring of the pots and pickup are fairly thin but they're easily replaceable so this isn't really much of a con.

Overall this is a fantastic inexpensive bass that it worth it's weight in gold, it's hard to find a reasonably priced lefty P Bass and this ticks all the boxes for me as a fantastic instrument, cheers!

Much better than expected
Florian Bosilcov 22.05.2018
I've owned and played extensively this bass for more than 2 years now. I wanted to wait for some time to pass before doing the review, as my main concern was that the neck wood would be of low quality and bend/skew with time. It hasn't! The neck is still straight as an arrow and plays perfectly.
Sure, right out of the box you can see some imperfections, but only on the non-essential stuff, like scratch plate trimming imperfections, unequal length on the saddle screws etc. but really, who cares, given the low price? The important thing is that there are no compromises on the stuff that matters.
I gave it a 5 star rating on the sound, but I have ordered an original Fender pick-up with it and fitted it immediately, so really, hadn't had the chance to play it with the original one. However, there are plenty of YouTube videos of people playing this bass unaltered and it sounds pretty good. As many wise bassists have stated, "the tone is in your fingers" :)
If you're just starting out, or planning to experiment with the P bass sound, it's the perfect starting axe. Do the proper adjustments (intonation, string action, truss rod) and that's it! It'll sound and play as good as any P bass does!

Very happy - just what i needed.
LH_Frank 26.04.2023
Update - Had this bass for 5 months or so now. That giddy 'new gear' soft focus honeymoon period has gone, and.. dammit it's still a great instrument, and (at this price point) a total no-brainer for any parents looking for a 'try out' bass for their kid (I'll be getting the 'shorty' version for my boy this year come Christmas, no problem).

Yes, I did put a new pickguard on it (with a bit of a struggle). Other than that and some strap locks it's still completely stock. So far I've used it loads for recording, learning bass (I'm a guitarist) and just jamming around for fun, but I would have ZERO QUALMS about gigging this if the need arose. It sounds great and the neck feels even better than when it was new now it's been played in a bit.

THE ONE ISSUE I have is after I had had the bass a while I discovered there are some missing notes courtesy of a low 16th fret. OK so I rarely (read: never) play up there, but it's kind of a shame. It does also raise concerns about Thomann's quality control, but hopefully it would not have passed QC if the low fret was anywhere below 12th fret.

**original review**
As a non-pro musician doing some home recording, I needed a cheap-but-good bass to DI direct into my recording PC as I can't abide spending time programming overly clinical midi basslines. I read and watched many on-line reviews on the PB-20 BK prior to purchase and on the whole I can happily report that they were completely accurate. The build and finish (one mine) is flawless and exactly as it appears in Thomann's catalogue. The components are cheap but very functional and the electrics are really surprisingly good - certainly more than good enough for my purposes. My hands are on the small size of average, but the neck shape and profile and the satin finish help make the bass very easy for me to play. Overall it is comparatively light and comfortable to play either sat down or on a strap - yes, it *is* slightly neck heavy, but a half decent strap fixes it. In fact, I'd agree with everyone else and add that the PB-20 is fun to play and sounds great straight out of the box with nothing but a tune-up.

All that said, if it was my 'main' instrument I'd certainly look into getting the frets polished and the ends filed and shaped as they are a bit rough. Nothing seriously off-putting, but they do feel a bit unfinished.

Like all lefty 'F****r' style guitars, the audio taper tone pot has been reverse wired and as a result is a bit 'all or nothing'. It's not as bad as some Mexican built guitars I've had (that were 5 times the price of this) but it's there. Fortunately, this is also easy to fix.

Just a personal preference but I think the 'whiter-than-white' (I really can't remember when I saw anything quite that white) three-ply pickguard the PB-20 BK ships with lets down the aesthetics a bit. Its marketed as a beginner instrument and with the black and white thing going on I'm afraid to say it looks very much the part. An aftermarket black or tortoiseshell pickguard would become a necessity if I were planning to take it out in public. Strangely, there are 12 screw holes for the pickguard here (count them) while most modern P-Basses (even the right handed version of this one!) have 13 holes.. odd. This doesn't bother me much, but it means a new pickguard will almost certainly require some drilling. I do like the headstock design on these Harley Benton basses though, it's a good take on the classic four-a-side P and J bass design in my view and looks a good deal better than the ones found on a lot of other brands of beginner guitars.

To summarise, the HB P-20 BK is a great value beginner bass that does well as a recording instrument and is giggable out of the box. With a bit of a setup and a few mods, it could become a real 'bass for all seasons' offering a great proposition as a base (geddit?) product for customisation and experimentation. I wonder what it would sound like with flats and an EMG GZR pickup in there... ?

First impressions of Harley Benton bad. First impressions of Thomann ok.
TwinkleTone 22.01.2020
I was not expecting champagne for beer money. But this bass had serious faults.

CONS: Truss rod unworkable/broken.
Fretjob poor, fretwire popping out of the board, mostly uneven frets and very sharp fret sprout.
The bass had other issues, and was very dirty.
PROS:
Electronics, PUP and hardware worked ok.
Paint and Lacquer finish fine.

For ANY pricetag, unworkable trussrods and very poor fretjobs are unacceptable. I would have done the required work on the frets at a push, followed by a setup. But since the trussrod was unworkable this would have been pointless. Neck relief needed adjustment and was not possible. QC is clearly an issue (other reviews make this clear). Respect to Thomann for recognizing this and sorting it out promptly. I returned the bass and Thomann refunded me without quibbling. First impressions of HB guitars are poor but of Thomann customer service are good. I may try again with another purchase from Thomann.

A work horse!
Mr.Cooggee 04.03.2018
Came out of the box ready to rock. The construction is solid just as you'd expect from a P.bass, the pickups are warm and has a good mid/low range. I'd recommend a pot swap, I've installed some CTS 250K for both volume and tone and the thing came alive...great improvement for less than £13. This is a great instrument overall (for the price).

Excellent Value for Money
Manos B. 13.08.2023
I mostly play guitar and wanted to also have a bass.

I bought this P-Bass and I think it has amazing value for it's cost. There's nothing wrong with it, Neck, frets, tuning stability is great. After all it's a simple, standard P-bass, which is kinda barebones by design.

Harley Benton PB-20K LH Standard P Bass
Mark3012 27.09.2014
Bought this left-handed Harley Benton P Bass as part of a bundle for my son (12) as his first bass guitar. He has been playing a budget lefty P Bass at school so knew what to expect... though he says this one is superior in just about every way. I'm a bass player myself so was able to evaluate this. Obviously it's not going to be as good as a Fender or even a Squier, but in fact it's not a million miles away from Squier quality and is surprisingly good, even without the miniscule price tag. The action and intonation were good and the bass was even vaguely in tune out of the box, which shows that at least some attention has been given to set-up. Very playable and a bargain at this price. Sounds good, too.

Incredible bass for the price!
JWD45 22.02.2018
Received my H-B Standard Series P-Bass last week and again, Thomann wowed me! This is the 3rd bass I've bought from them and i haven't been disappointed yet. The neck feels just like my $1500 Fender P, and plays just as well. A pickup upgrade would be nice, but the original sounds pretty darn good. Going to order a PB-50 vintage next, as soon as they're in. Thomann, I love you guys!

Great value!
Anonym 07.02.2016
I bought this as my first bass so I didn?t want something too expensive. This is a solid beginners bass that looks and feels way more expensive than it is. Very happy with it.
Delivery was fast and the product came in perfect condition.
