Dead low E string

I bought 3 sets, because the gauges are exact match for my new guitar. When it was time to replace strings, everything sounded great - until I strung the low E. It sounded dull and dead, which you could hear both acoustically and when plugged in. I opened the second set, replaced the low E with a new one and got the same result. Replaced the low E again with same gauge string (50) from an old pack of GHS that I had lying around for years, and it sounded fine. Maybe it was bad luck or the ones I got were old, but all in all I'm not buying these again.
